Are worms found in bags of potting soil?

Asked by Wine (641points) September 3rd, 2013

I bought a bag of natural soil and I don’t want worms to end up in pots that I’m using inside my apartment. So before I open the bag, incase I may have to return it, can worms be found there?

I spread my soil in old pans and cook it. I use powdered algae to fertilize I don’t know about worms but sometimes the dirt has aphids or other bugs.

Yes, unless it’s been sterilized. You can buy potting soil that’s been sterilized. It’ll say so on the label.

Worms are good for soil and plants. (And for fishing.)

Plastic pots, plastic soil, plastic flowers and NO plastic worms.

By the way having worms in a bag of soil is not a reason for returning the bags of soil.

You might get some life in the soil if it wasn’t sterilized. Or you can sterilize it yourself. Put what you need on a pan and throw it in the oven at 165 degrees F for 20 or 30 minutes. I think that’s the right temperature but I can look it up if you want. No hotter or you’ll cook out the organic matter.

Huh, I have never heard of sterilizing soil. Don’t you want helpful bacteria in soil??

I have never seen a worm or bug in potting soil. Use it as it is. That way the bacteria can work. Leave it alone.
