What is it like working in a grocery store?

Asked by flip86 (6213points) September 6th, 2013

I got hired at a grocery store today. I’ve never worked in a place that had so many employees. I’m not doing customer service. I was hired as maintenance, which means I’ll essentially be a janitor.

As long as you don’t have to deal with the general public it should be ok.
Unless, of course, you’re a people person.
I’m NOT a people person and I usually end up wanting to punch at least 10 people in the face on a daily basis.

I really hope that you enjoy it! :0)
Let us know how it goes.

Grocery Stores are where dreams go to die.

I hope it goes good for you. I really think it depends on the company you got hired for. My daughter works at a grocery store as a cashier she is part time. They treat her like crap. It is her first job ever. She gets one day a week, usually from 4pm until 8pm sometimes they send her home early. They have just started giving her one day basically every other week. She is looking for a new job. I think you will get treated better, I hope you get treated better. Good luck. :)

@KaY_Jelly I think it will be better than you describe. It’s Hannaford, the biggest employer in Maine. The employee turnover rate seems quite low. I’ve shopped there(store I got hired at)for more than 5 years and a majority of the employees have stayed the same.

Congratulations on your job! I worked in retail clothing not grocery, but I really enjoyed working in the stores. The staff was almost always really nice and team oriented and customers were usually very nice too. I hope you have a great experience working there. The tough part is probably that they are open long hours and being on your feet all day can take a while to get used to. Also, if you will be cleaning bathrooms that can be a drag.

A friend of mine just hit her 40th year working in Lucky’s, then Safeway. She is now an auditor for them, though she spent many years clerking.

@flip86 yes I’m pretty sure you will get treated better. This is a new chain in our town so I really do think its an isolated coincidence related to the store which is not so popular, my daughter is not the only employee being treated like that. I just thought I’d share our experience since you asked ;) and I hope it goes much better for you and it sounds like it will :))

You’ll be doing a useful job, no question about that. You’ve heard, “Clean up on aisle 6.”. That’s you. Mostly people won’t notice you personally, but they’ll notice if things aren’t aren’t spic and span. Learn everything you can. Be proud of yourself. Be polite to everybody. And smile. A good attitude can take you a long way. You’ll run into grumpy people, but just be gentle with them. Just think, “They have to live with all that anger. I’m glad I don’t.” The only way to go is up. And then you can look back and say? “I started at the bottom and look at me now.”

According to my sister-in-laws that work in one – hell.

I wouldn’t know personally, as I’ve never worked at a grocery store. I have, however, worked in a restaurant for a year and Lowes for about a month. Yeah, hell sounds about right.

I’d think being a janitor would be alright. Lack of customer interaction sounds good to me.

It will be what you make of it. I worked part time one summer at the Indian Mound IGA that was like Hannaford. It was alright. I knew it was just filler work when I started. I did the night maintenance and stocking shelves, bagging sometimes when they needed me during store hrs. This store closed at a respectable hour at night so we had the place to ourselves and some of the shit we did in there…well you will see.

It’s a good job where you only observe the grocery items, stores & customers but it is apart from a customer dealing.
