What's on your nightstand or bedside table?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37748points) September 7th, 2013

On one side, I keep my Kindle, which has a new friend, my new tablet pc with a Kindle reader, and a lamp and clock. The lower part of the nightstand is stuffed with books in various stages of being read.

The other side has a beautiful Japanese lacquer box with mother-of-pearl inlay in a cherry blossom design full of memorabilia. The lower part of that nightstand is empty.

I’m currently reading a psychology book about meditation, The Mindful Way Through Depression, and now that I have Kindle on the tablet pc where I can search the book like a paper one, I’m reading several poetry collections. I love Edna St. Vincent Millay’s writing. Theme and Variations is a personal favorite.

What do you have on or in or around your nightstands or bedside tables?

If you have books, would you care to name them?

A Cuban ashtray shaped like a man’s head. The mouth is open, and you put your cigarettes in there. He also has a small straw hat, which may be removed. There’s also a cigar in his mouth, which is also its own item. I love that thing and I use it as decoration, never actually butted out any smokes in it.

Glow in the dark plastic lizard. Love that little guy.

Ten bucks, and a bunch of change.

Blue marker.

Waitress cash belt.

Buncha papers. Mostly receipts, a rent thing, Satanic incantation and a pay slip.

A little blue flashlight.

Some guy’s finger.

Sunglasses and case.

The nightstand also has a built in night light which is pretty sweet. Makes everything all warm and fuzzy at night.

Until a year ago, I didn’t have my own room. I appropriated the office and moved my things in it, so my bed is wedged between the computer desk and a bookcase—not a conventional nighstand set up. On the computer desk, I have alarm clock (it changes colours and doubles as a nightlight), a glass of water, and my phone. On the bookshelf that is at level with my bed, I have a section of fiction books, Devil in the White City (the book that I am currently reading), a to-do list sheet, my 3DS, Kindle, hand sanitizer, and a container of pens.

Back when I was a practising Pagan, my nightstand was also my altar and some of the Pagan ornaments are still there; a statue of the Horned God, a goblet, a platter with a pentagram on it, some candles (unused). But now it’s also littered with other stuff; a can of spray deodorant, a couple of books (can’t remember what they are and can’t be bothered to trek upstairs to look), a bottle of lube, and some badges and writsbands that I collected from Pride a couple of weeks ago. At night, my cellphone and glasss go on there too.

Right now I am using my fiancé‘s workout bench as my nightstand because we are still moving in and placing furniture. There’s a water bottle with three or so hair ties around its middle, a roll of toilet paper for kleenex stuck on one of the bench handles (I get allergy attacks in the middle of the night), eye drops (same reason), chapstick, mukluks, toe socks, weed/pipe/lighter, my glasses, and my iPhone. I read exclusively on the iPhone at night to avoid keeping the light on. Right now I am rereading Gaiman’s American Gods.

Those of you with Kindles – how bright is the little reading light on the new models? Is it dim enough to not bother a restless bed partner?

I can never keep my nightstand in order. Here’s what’s there currently:
Papers—>receipts, old homework, stuff with random info
pen
folded/scrunched up napkins that I hoard in my pocket incase I need to blow my nose
condoms
more papers
a pad of paper
gum
phone charger
an ashtray with change in it. If you had problems with change like me, get an ashtray, too. It helped so much.

My coffee cup (…mmmmm, coffee…); my fiancé‘s iHome alarm clock with my old iPhone 3GS that I use to play sounds to mask my tinnitus and other environmental sounds; some moisturizer; a Lava Lamp (I need to get a timer for it, because I like to fall asleep watching the blobs move and morph); some extra electrodes for the cheapie home EMP massager I ordered from the internet. There is also a drawer containing too many things to list, and a lower shelf on which I place my tablet and smartphone when I go to sleep.

Usually just my glasses and my iPad. Sometimes the clothes I stripped off before crawling into bed.

A 4 foot tall rectangular paper lamp with a multi colored bulb with remote that lets me throw a psychedelic light show on my ceiling.
Next to it is a reproduction of a Ming Dynasty war horse.
Gorgeous piece or art, golden brown horse with green blanket, white tassles and blonde mane.

Humor of the day.
My bed is next to the window and the other morning I was reaching up at daybreak to close the blinds when my arm gave out, the other was up in the air reaching for the blinds and I fell over and smashed my nose on the window sill. Oh man…it hurt SO badly. I was waiting for blood to start gushing forth, but, just ended up with a tweaked nose and a red mark. lol
