Do long distance swimmers go in the toilets in the boats that follow them?

I just assumed that they’ve just been using the toilet in the boats that followed them. It never even occured to me that they would go in the ocean. Is that a fact? I don’t care how big the ocean is I wouldn’t want to swim with my waste. Gross. And how is that not against the law?

Where do you think most waste from boats goes?
It never occurred to me that it might be against the law to urinate in a body of water. How could you even enforce such a law?
I’d imagine they could pee without anyone knowing. I’m sure defecation is done in the boat. It would be pretty difficult to do that while swimming and wearing a swimsuit.
To elucidate, three miles off the coast and waste can go directly from boats into the ocean. I’m not sure what ocean liners do but that’s what sailboats usually do. If she got into the boat, she wouldn’t be swimming nonstop, would she? There’s much worse “crap” – pardon the expression – dumped into the ocean in the form of toxic waste from ships.
I found this; doesn’t sound to me like she’d be getting in any boat.
@livelaughlove21 you’re right, they can’t defecate in their swimsuit so they must be going on the boat.
@janbb I don’t care swimming ’‘non- stop’’ isn’t that important considering what we’re talking about is waste products. Yuk.
How about _’If she nourished herself she wouldn’t be swimming nonstop, would she?‘__ She has to stop to injest the nourishment.
So, the waste from the ships is just dumped as is? The ships don’t treat the waste first?
@ccrow your link doesn’t look like a webpage. It looks like someone typed a paragraph on a piece of white paper.
@flo If you read what the white paper says (presumably cut and pasted) it doesn’t seem like she would be producing much poop.
No, they’re not allowed to touch the boat at all, otherwise it’s not a continuous swim.
Toileting, along with vomiting, is done “on the move” so to speak.
It’s not pretty, but hey, if it’s good enough for the fishies.
To get out of the water at all, for any length of time and for any reason, invalidates the attempt.
Reality isn’t pretty. It just is.
Here is the page it was on.
And here’s a quote from this page-
’...her only “breaks” coming when she stopped to tread water while eating peanut butter for energy or drinking fresh water handed to her from the escort boat…’
It should be considered valid the same way they don’t deduct the amount of time you spent eating and using the toilet at work. It is a neccesity.
Also there must be some way of equiping the gear to include something for waste.
Do the ships not treat their waste?
” And how is that not against the law? ”
The probably hold it until they reach international waters and there is no law.
.
If it needs to be explained, then here is the explanation: Ships and swimmers follow different rules.
..if it’s good enough for the fishies’’ Humans are supposed to be better than the fishes.
It is still disgusting to swim in your urine.
…along with all the waste products from all the fish, gulls, turtles, seals, whales, etc etc…..
to say nothing of all the much more disgusting waste humans put in the ocean, like trash, oil, chemicals and such.
I don’t care how big the ocean is, and whatever else there is no excuse. There is enough waste already in there.
@flo
” Humans are supposed to be better than the fishes. ”
Really?
I find you attitude insulting to my many fish friends!
@janbb did you just run out of arguments?
@flo If the swimmer has a problem swimming in their own urine, they’re more than welcome to abstain from long-distance swimming.
@flo There’s no real argument; there’s the facts which apparently disgust you but it is what it is in this case.
Yep, they go in the water. I don’t really see why this is so disgusting or why it is a concept that is difficult to grasp.
Where do whales shit? Consider how big a whale is, and how much more waste they put out than any hundred humans, I fail to see the issue here.
Turds are biodegradable, especially in water. As for the swimmer getting all up in it, it seems to me they unceremoniously drop the deuce and swiftly leave that spot. The water is self wiping. It’s not any different mechanically than flushing the john. The people in the boats surely don’t want to see this, and they don’t hand the swimmer magazines to read as they do this. Its more of a functional thing not “me time” for swimmers.
Icky. I would assume they’d just go. Move while they’re moving. Yeah. The ocean is a very big place with lots of bacteria and fishes to eat nastiness like that.
As if the ocean isn’t already filled with a shit ton of animal waste…<boggle>
The OP’s argument that we are better than fishies is, well…dead in the water.
Do you think your pee goes into the toilet and stops there? Everything ends up in the environment including things a lot more deadly than pee.
Haha, never thought about that. The ocean is their bathroom?
1. It’s probably one of the least harmful things that we dump in the water.
2. Where do you think all the thousands of different sea animals/birds do their business?
3. The swimmer is moving the whole time so they wouldn’t just be chilling out in their own waste.
4. “How is this not against the law?” Seriously, do you not think there are far bigger things to worry about than making a law against having a piss in the sea? I resisted the urge to say “there are bigger fish to fry”!!!
So, you’re all fighting for more garbage in the ocean.
I can’t wait to be an accident almost drowning and injest all that yummy stuff while I try to tread (edited)water. That would be heavenly.
No one’s fighting for anything, we’re just explaining how it is.
I’d like to see you “thread water” though, that would be a pretty neat trick.
“A video posted yesterday by a Boston Massachusetts television station explains that officials in the quaint coastal town of Nahant, Massachusetts found a local beach fouled by a huge amount of human excrement, toilet paper, rubber gloves, flip-flops, plastic bottles, dental floss, condoms, personal hygiene items and a urinal cake covered in a mass of disgusting brownish foam.”
Yum.
..The quote above is from this article.

I’m just showing “how it is”, just like most of you all are. Again, yum. Now let’s all go and do similar things on Mars even if there are no bodies of water there.
@flo No-one is really saying that ocean dumping is not a problem and that pollution from cruise ships is good; it just seems a stretch to go from Diana Nyad peeing in the ocean to the apocalypse is near.
My question is about long distance swimmers in general, not Diana Nyad, just for the record.
The amount of long distance swimmer urine/feces in the world’s oceans, measured in parts per trillion, is a number so small it may as well be immeasurable. You’re ingesting more feces when you eat peanut butter.
google it

You have made the jump from, What? Swimmers don’t ‘go’ in the escort boats?! to “you’re all fighting for more garbage in the ocean.” Forgive me, but I can’t follow that logic. I don’t think anyone is advocating more waste in the ocean; you asked a specific question which was answered, and then went off on a tangent because the answer grossed you out.
Okay you’re right, it is not fighting for more garbage, it is fighting for manitaining the amount of garbage. I stand corrected.
