How do we pronounce MOOC to make it sound like something good?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) September 10th, 2013

MOOC, of course, is the acronym for “massive open online courses”. Harvard and MIT began the collaboration, starting the EdX consortium to develop open-source software for online education. But it’s been rapidly gathering steam since. Stanford has signed on and Google teamed up EdX in the development efforts. It’s open to all colleges and even to individuals and corporations wishing to play a role. So it looks like MOOC is happening. Is the acronym like the Australian brand name UGHH—so ugly it’s lovable. Or is there a clever twist in pronunciation that makes MOOC not sound like “Moo-k”?

I like the sound of “Mook”. I don’t know why, but I like it. Any other way of pronouncing it would just sound like you were trying too hard not to call it “Mook”

We could pronounce it “mock” but I don’t think that is any improvement.

I suggest we contact the RNC and ask them to come up with a new acronym. They seem to have a knack for giving positive names to negative actions. Not that I am saying Moocs are a bad idea mind you, just the opposite.

Hyphenate it. MO-OC. So it is pronounced as mo awk.

I like mook, rhyming with book.

@keobooks & @rojo It’s growing on me. I’m starting to like it too.

@flip86 Ha! Take a bad situation and find a way to make it worse.

@snowberry In northern England and Scotland, book is pronounces “boo-Kh”.

Either or any pronunciation works for me. (;oD

How about M-O-O-C, as in, every letter by itself.

I like mook, rhyming with spook. Sounds kind of pixie-ish.

How about we limit it to one specific degree and call it Complete Unmitigated Masters?

ETpro's avatar

@snowberry OK. Easy to please.

@ragingloli Pronouncing each letter of an acronym. How Philistine.

@Sunny2 I’m definitely warming up to mook, rhyming with spook. Thanks.

@Blondesjon Or CUM for short? :-)

Moosie came to mind, without having read the details. :)

@DaphneT Moosie like having tha attributes of a Moose?

DaphneT's avatar

@ETpro I was just sounding out the acronym. But do the attributes of a Moose associate with Massive OOC’s? Hmm, let’s consider. When I hear the word Moose, I think large creature, goes where it wants to go, when moving fast produces lots of sound of crashing and damage. There may be a correlation.

Regardless how you end up pronouncing it, make a commercial with MOOC in a bowl and pour milk over it and cool morning music. Mmmmmm!

rojo's avatar

@snowberry But if you do it that way, the entire thing sounds like you just discovered the milk had soured overnight.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm! uck!

snowberry's avatar

@rojo No, no no NO! Not like that! It also needs a cool cartoon character, and maybe a bouncy jingle that you can’t get out of your head that will make everyone want milk on their bowl of morning MOOC.

ETpro's avatar

@DaphneT Excellent point.

@snowberry Oh yeah! MOOC and milk for breakfast.

@rojo In defense of @snowberry who said anything about sour milk? Oh yeah, you did. Any connection to sour grapes?

rojo's avatar

@ETpro No, just an observation. No need to read into it more than there is. And, no need to defend those perfectly capable of doing a good job on their own.

snowberry's avatar

@rojo OK, rethinking here. How about crumbled MOOC over plain or strawberry yoghurt? That way you can have your sour milk and eat it too!

rojo's avatar

Mmmmmmmmmmmmoook! Sounds…...well, ok.

Kellogs Krumbled Mook. A tasty way to start your day, even on a sour note!
