Ordering car parts in US for right-hand drive car?

Asked by trailsillustrated (16804points) September 11th, 2013

The electric switches for my car windows have died and the shop quote is making me cry. I am looking online for replacement switches and most of them are in the US, will it matter if I buy a master window switch for a left-hand drive car to put into a right-hand drive car? I don’t want to pay the prices here! ( it’s a 1997 Mazda mx-6).. I am stressing so badly about this…..

<- knows nothing about cars except (maybe) where the gas goes

I don’t think it’ll cause any electric problems but if the armrest has any sort of cruve to it it probably won’t fit

My best advice is to go on line at a British website or South African websites.
Try Bid or Buy.co.za it’s a South African website where you may find anything.
But I think the safest route may be to ask an auto electrician.

Could try and find a online forum that deals with that vehicle model or type of service. I’ve found more times than not just calling a place to whatever your issue is typically can give me good information on it. Sometimes going to have to call multiple places.

@DWW25921 thank you so much that is just what I need and the prices are oh so attractive- BUT I was just over there saying I was going to do this and they said it wouldn’t work if it’s for a left-hand drive- and I said well why not? They said ‘it would be all back to front’ and something with the wiring? meh, I’m going to look in Britain and South Africa… This is a smallish town so I don’t know if they know what theyr’e talking about or what. Sad face here.

Okay let us go through the steps:
1) Switches need to be replaced ( Car is in Australia )
2) The shop you go to has a HIGH price for replacement switches
3) Cheaper maybe available in US
4) Shop tells you it won’t work. ( Wink wink ! So buy our expensive parts )

My step 5) go to another shop.

@Tropical_Willie I’ve done alot of asking around and on forums, apparently the wiring? would make it operate the wrong window, like the master switch would be on the wrong side and apparently the loop or whatever would be in the wrong order. So I rang a wrecker here about 1 hour away, they have one (double price of US) and they will put it in too. So I guess I’ll do that, apparently you have to re-wire it or something to make left hand thing work on right hand car. Bah… oh well at least I can get one. Thanks though…

There may be a number of websites on the internet selling parts, but personally I suggest you to go for http://jdmperformanceparts.co.uk/ where you can browse about millions of auto parts and get the lowest prices with the best possible discounts.
