Is it true that drinking coffee while working makes us more creative?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23798points) September 12th, 2013

Today I had to do a writing assignment at home. At first I thought I couldn’t think up any idea for it. But now as I was doing it while drinking a cup of coffee I was surprised to find that I was doing it without any problem. I had so much ideas that I couldn’t put them all in my 100-word work. Is this because of the coffee or because the assignment was easier than I thought before?

No, I don’t. I think it artificially “wakes you up” which just means your brain is starting to function. However, I think if you just woke up naturally, without any stimulant, you’d be MORE creative. Coffee makes me scatterbrained for a couple of hours. That’s why I only drink about ½ a cup in the morning.

Coffee doesn’t make me more creative. It does, however, make me less of a bitch. Lord help the person that messes with me before my morning coffee.

So can you explain what happened to me at that time?

Katniss's avatar

Sure. Something clicked in your brain and the creative juices started flowing.

Not in my experience as an advertising creative director. In fact, coffee doesn’t even keep me awake.

I can’t say that it makes you more creative. However, I can say with certainty that an awake person works better than a sleepy one.
If the coffee woke you up and got your heart pumping a little faster by getting you out of the chair and putting some caffeine into your system, then it worked.
I chew Jolt gum or suck on Jolt mints when I am near a deadline. That works for me – and it keeps my breath minty fresh and doesn’t stain my teeth.

@LuckyGuy What? Where can you buy Jolt gum??

LuckyGuy's avatar

I get it online. Five mints or two pieces of the gum have the same caffeine as a cup of coffee.
I will PM you the address. I don’t want anyone to think I am advertising for them

@LuckyGuy Thank you! Those would be great to have when I’m away from my coffee pot!

The stuff works, so be careful. It is easy to overdo it and find your heart palpitating when it shouldn’t be. I never take more than one coffee’s worth.

@LuckyGuy – could you pm me with it also please?

How much is “one coffee?”

LuckyGuy's avatar

@Dutchess_III Figure $2.00 for a pack of 12 pieces of gum = to 6 cups of coffee. A lot cheaper than starbux and you don’t have to pee as often.
Figure $3 for a box of mints holding 45 = 9 cups of coffee.

My fellow graduate students were no more creative in their coffee-addicted states than when they were not strung on caffeine. They used it to control their sleeping schedules and stay awake, but they still had to wait for ideas to come to them in order to get their papers done (coffee or no coffee.)

For me, a hot shower is much better for brainstorming creative ideas. Something about the privacy, the comfort of warm water, inhaling so much steam, helps me to sort through both academic and creative writing projects far better than when I am at a desk, or in the fetal position on my bed trying to wish my deadlines away.

A moderate amount makes me more focused, but I’m not sure that means more creative. I think one can beat a subject to death on coffee, but it’s tunnel vision. Creativity, to me, is a very relaxed state where the mind can wander free in a pleasant way—a state opposite from the one produced by coffee. 20 minutes of meditation is more conducive to a creative state for me, but once I’ve latched onto something specific and interesting, now that is the time for coffee.

I don’t know if drinking coffee makes us more creative or not but it may depend on the individual ,I love grinding, brewing and drinking coffee daily, for me life is meaningless without good coffee.

Stimulants affect us differently each time we take them. It pretty much depends on the hormone/chemical make up of our brain at the moment.

Blondesjon's avatar

Sure.

I find the creativity is enhanced exponetially if I supplement my coffee with marijuana.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Now that’s a whole different story @Blondesjon. :D
