General Question

I'm going with Angelfish. Is there anything that I should know?

Asked by Mama_Cakes (11173points) September 16th, 2013

Decided against fancy goldfish. I’d like to go with a 3 angels and some dwarf gouramis. I’ve read that they’ll get along as long as raised young.

Angelfish can be aggressive and eat smaller fish.

You’ll need a heater.

Have a good one (Jager Thermostat Heater
150W).

A concern is PH. My tap water’s PH is 8.0. I plan on adding driftwood to help lower the PH. Not sure if that will be enough.

If two of them pair off, they will be aggressive toward the third, and probably to other fish as well. I have a pair, and they keep spawning and eating their eggs. I never see the few tetras I have, because they are always hiding from the angels. I think the only way I’m going to get to see other fish is if I get another tank just for the angelfish…

@ccrow my father got around that by putting a piece of Plexiglas down the middle of the tank. There were holes drilled in the plexiglass to allow the water to move freely, but the angelfish couldn’t pass the glass.

Make sure the tank is big enough, or as the angels grow, their fins will flop over from the constant turning.

@WestRiverrat There’s a thought…:-)

I’ve read that if you raise them with community fish when they’re juveniles, they do fine.
