Did you ever change your avatar and then not be able to recognize your own answers?

Asked by janbb (63219points) September 19th, 2013

Someone just complained to me about missing the Penguin. I must confess I am having trouble identifying myself too, although I did want to introduce Frodo to the collective. I am also dismayed when longtime easily identified Jelly’s avatars are changed. (E.g., CWOTUS just isn’t as smart since Willow left.) Have you had a similar problem?

Once, I thought that you were Leanne. :) I’d like to see the penguin back!

Headhurts's avatar

No but I get confused when others do. A lot.

wildpotato's avatar

Yes. I switched it to a picture of myself for a few days in my first year of membership here. Couldn’t find myself easily and switched back. This one’s pretty distinctive.

downtide's avatar

Yes! I changed mine a couple of weeks ago after having the same one for about two years.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Only a few times but that was only when I spoofed another avatar and did not check closely enough, thinking they were me.

^ Beware, you might get spoofed Hee hee hee

tinyfaery's avatar

Yes! I used to change my avatar frequently. Now I just leave it as it is. Easier that way.

@downtide Your new avatar looks like an evolution from your old one. I didn’t even need to look at your name to know it was still you. Well done :)

Aside for dressing up for holidays I’ve never changed mine. Probably never will.

marinelife's avatar

Yes, I have to keep searching for my dogs.

Many times. When other people change their avatar I get confused.

I still fondly remember the time my bunny ears avatar was spoofed. It was great fun.

I haven’t changed my avatar since I started this account. I’m sure I’d have more trouble finding my own answers because usually this bright orange avatar sticks out like a sore thumb.

Once in a while, like when I used the Burl Cain avatar just recently. When I use killer vehicles or electricity for my avatar my posts stand out to me better.

whitenoise's avatar

I don’t really ever change it.

I don’t use one so I don’t care. What is assigned everywhere ( I am at at least 10 of these places ) is five with me.

The user name ( which I do use a lot ) means something.

zenzen's avatar

Nope. I never change.

filmfann's avatar

I change it occasionally, usually for a holiday or celebration, and I do have a problem finding my responses.

I once changed my avatar for Halloween because we were talking about what would make for the creepiest icon. I found a horrific image and used it as my profile pic. I got lots of PMs and public call outs about it. People said it was creepy and scary looking and they wanted to see Marcie back. I got stubborn and refused to take it down until after Halloween.

But then, half a day later, I opened up some thread I posted in. I saw my own icon and jumped back. I thought “Oh MAN! That pic is NASTY!” then I realized it was mine. So I changed it back. I didn’t mean to creep myself out.

@keobooks What image was it?

glacial's avatar

Welcome back, @penguin!

janbb's avatar

@glacial Thanks iceberg! I can’t stay out of my penguin suit for long!

I usually don’t have any trouble finding my answers. I enjoy changing my surroundings in different ways, and changing my avatar is one of them. Change challenges the mind and is a good exercise for the brain. My memory is something I never want to lose!

There was a time when I did become confused for a moment. I have used Marcie as an avatar before (my husband used Peppermint Patty). This was a long time ago. Then I noticed @keobooks one day and it made me look twice! I had to remind myself I was no longer using that avatar. :)

glacial's avatar

@jonsblond I’ve enjoyed the twinned avatars that you and @blondsjon use. Lately, though… you seem to be on different wavelengths. ;)

keobooks's avatar

@dxs – I can’t recall exactly what it was, but I think it had a ton of razor sharp needle teeth and it was biting an eyeball. I put “scary” in google and searched until I found something I thought was disturbing. It was this doll looking thing.. lots of teeth. I wish I could remember more.

It wasn’t this but it was kind of like it. I can’t find the exact one anymore.

Pachy's avatar

Haven’t had that problem yet, but with each passing birthday I worry about the possibility of a time when I see my current avatar and won’t be able to recognize my own answers.

Hypo pretends to be me sometimes. That confused ME for a while. ^_^

augustlan's avatar

I’m nearly always some kind of “A”, so even when I change my avatar it’s usually not too hard to find myself.

hearkat's avatar

I’ve used 3 avatars in the past 7+ years – the old Calvin & Hobbes Hug, a halloween pic of myself, and this custom hearkat, so I can always find myself, but I do get messed up when others change theirs.

DWW25921's avatar

I have a folder with some regulars I use. I use a hippie van, a horse and a cannon most of the time. I also use a stop sign. I’ve used these same ones for years and it helps me find myself as no one else uses these photos.

cookieman's avatar

Nope. I have never changed mine in… five (?!) years. wow

I do, however, get confused in real life when I change my outfit.

@tinyfaery: I miss the lips.

You may get confused again. You are just so “spoofable”; and we do not have to agree on everything to be spoofed Aye Capt’n if we spoof into warp speed the engines may not hold!
