What's the deal with all the copyright infringement on Etsy?
Etsy’s terms of service forbid any kind of copyright infringement pretty explicitly and offer tools to report infringement. Yet when I’m browsing, I see sellers all the time who have made hundreds or even thousands of sales of materials featuring licensed characters (i.e., Tardis t-shirts, Disney Princess phone cases and stickers, etc).
How are they able to do this? Or am I just missing something?

They’re breaking the law. I see it on Redbubble all the time too. Not so much on Zazzle as it’s heavily moderated. I’ve noticed the same thing.
@DWW25921 that’s pretty much what I figured. What I’m wondering is how these gigantic shops that have thousands of sales get away with it. Not that I condone the government swooping in to facefuck people, but I’m really surprised the government hasn’t swooped in to facefuck them. No matter, I was mostly curious.
@Indiana_Bones The government has no power to initiate a copyright infringement case. Only the copyright holder can do that.
@SavoirFaire Very true. The company that owns the name being used will have to find it and pressure the sites that host it by themselves. Some sites, like Etsy, make it clear that it’s the artists fault which means the copyright holder has to go after hundreds of people individually. It’s really not a chance you want to take.
Here’s what I think. The actual store may have individual copyrights like MacDonald’s used to have with Disney.
But if not, Esty is under copyright laws like YouTube or any other business and they do not monitor afaik but rely on their customers to monitor, so the only way to make sure any of the individual businesses are not breaking the copyright laws is to report the individual business that you think have possibly done any copyrighting to Esty.
Otherwise it seems they just get away with it.
Hope that helps. :)
