I just pounded a wooden garden stake into the palm of my hand, going for a Tetanus booster tomorrow but how can I ease the pain now?

Asked by Coloma (47193points) September 27th, 2013

I was tacking down my garden fence when the stake I was pounding split and punctured the palm of my hand quite seriously.
It bled profusely and I cleaned it well, put an antibiotic ointment on and wrapped it until I can get a tetanus booster tomorrow at a walk in clinic as it is a Saturday.
It is killing me right now and I wondered if soaking it in hot water or icing it might help. Do wounds respond better to heat or cold?

Outside stake, possible tetanus, it’s going to hurt but, hot soak. Open it up. Bite on something if you need to.

@Adirondackwannabe Yeah, I was thinking hot soak, ow!
@jaytkay Haha…yep, I really nailed myself.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

How about an antiseptic that dissolves in hot water?

Coloma's avatar

^^^ I only have neosporin, unless I soak my hand in bleach. :-/

Ow ow ow ow ow!!!!!
Do you have any Advil or alieve? How about whiskey?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Don’t do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Don’t do whiskey either, sorry Judi.

I don’t even drink, but if I did, and I did something like that, I would probably be drowning my sorrows. That’s what they do on the cowboy movies. :-)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Judi Well you could do it from within, shots of alcohol but it would still leave a gap

You have an excellent ability to type while injured. (I would be screaming all the way to the hospital) I would hold your hand above your heart and pinch on the part of the arm to stop blood flow. You could always take a shower and relax/meditate to soothing music.

Coloma's avatar

@Judi Having a beer. haha
@Adirondackwannabe Oh what the hell…
@talljasperman I’m left handed and it is my right hand, some really good pounding action from left to right. lol
@jonsblonde….send happy brownies please. :-)

Coloma's avatar

Running a super hot bath right now for the painful soak moment.

jonsblond's avatar

Eat your brownies and take some sleeping pills to help you sleep. If you don’t have sleeping pills, take some Benadryl. same ingredient as otc sleeping pills

Shoot, no brownies? Sorry, I’m out. :(

(I’m not a doctor and my advice might be terrible, but that’s what I’d do.)

@Coloma I suggest not getting the hand wet. Just take the bath to relax.

Any chance you could just run to an Urgent Care type place? I worry about infection.

wildpotato's avatar

Keep your hand elevated above your heart. It will decrease the blood flow and throb a little less. I hope you feel better soon.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Coloma I’m suggesting you wrap the hand, then do three or four shots of the whiskey, and deal with this tomorrow?

Coloma's avatar

@chyna

1st thing in the morning, too late now.
My bath is full…is getting it wet really bad, if it is clean water and soap?

Judi's avatar

I’m thinking that you don’t want to soak it in the same bath as your body crud. Not that you’re cruddy or anything, but there will be butt juices in it.

Try a couple Ibuprofen.

@Coloma soap would be okay but water moves it along all the lines leading to it.

If it’s not bleeding, make it bleed.

jonsblond's avatar

My husband hates bath because of butt juices. You don’t want butt juices invading your wound @Coloma!

Coloma's avatar

Never fear, no butt juices here…I just ran my hand under the hot water while my butt marinated. lol
Fuck..it hurtst! Waaah!
I couldn’t believe it..wham and there is a chunk of wood embedded about ⅓rd of an inch into my poor wittle hand. Guess it proves true the theory of most accidents occur within the home. lol

Judi's avatar

Oh no! Get to a doctor early tomorrow.
When I was a teenager I was sneaking smoking in my bedroom and accidentally slammed the window on my finger. It tore it open. It was winter and I didn’t want to admit what I did so I waited until it was infected to tell my mom. The doctor had to rip open the part that had healed to get the splinters and paint out of it. Don’t let it start healing before a doctor sees it!

jonsblond's avatar

I’m so sorry @Coloma. I hope you feel better soon. At least it wasn’t a stupid accident. I was poking holes in potatoes with a fork before I put them in the oven to cook and I jabbed my hand with the fork. It was so painful! That was stupid.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

At least take something for the pain!! :(

Coloma's avatar

@jonsblond Fork stabbing…ow!
@Mama_Cakes Yep, 2 beers, no drugs…damn! haha
I have Tylenol but it is basically worthless.
@Judi Oh my, how painful! Yes…doc. in the morning. Bah!

The butt juice tirade has made me laugh, good medicine. :-D
.

Coloma's avatar

Well you guys…off to bed, thanks for the advice, sympathy and laughs. Butt juice…I will never forget that. haha

Mama_Cakes's avatar

Le us know how you make out!

Coloma's avatar

All fixed up…, got a booster, hoping no chunk of wood remains in my hand. Probing did not reveal anything for now. Numerous other little splinters to fester though. haha
Still sore..but, soldier on. Cleaned house this morning, some Chlorox gave me an extra boost.
Nothing like self crucifixion. Gotta keep laughing. :-/
