Are you a narcissist?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37748points) September 28th, 2013

I caught myself reading my own writing for the pleasure of it today.
I am guilty as charged.

I am intimately involved in community theatre, and that does require a level of self-love that might be unhealthy. “Flowers in my dressing room? Why, thank you!”

How’s your self-esteem? Is it healthy or overblown?

I think it is healthy…but..admittedly. I am a bit of an intelligence snob. I have a hard time relating to those I consider dull and neurotic.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

Oh, @Coloma, I find neurotic people quite fun and hardly dull. Psychotics, on the other hand, are a different story.

FUCK YEAH!!

Berserker's avatar

Not really, but I don’t think much more of most of everyone else, either. Unless they’re Vikings.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@johnpowell That settles it.

@Symbeline I’m not much, but I’m all I think about, eh?

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

No thanks I’m square.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Indeed? I always pictured you as more of a trapezoid.

Berserker's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake Well, I gotta have some confidence in myself. Nobody else is gonna lol. :)

livelaughlove21's avatar

I am not very confident in myself. I have my moments, but I’m no narcissist.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@livelaughlove21 There. There. Keep coming back. You’ll learn. ;-)

AnonymousWoman's avatar

I do love myself, but I don’t view myself as a narcissist. As for my self-esteem, there is definitely room for improvement there.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

Chin up, @AnonymousWoman. You’re worth it.

We discussed this here recently . I contended this site attracts narcissists based on how it is set up. Just look at every post in the entire site and tell me we all don’t just love the sound of our own voice.

I think narcissist is one of those very over-used terms. No, I am not a narcissist and I don’t think reading my own writing makes me one either. If we can’t even read our own writing, who can?

No, I am not.

I, in all of my astounding glory, asked this same question recently. Although yours isn’t as good as mine, I still find it intriguing as I get to bless this thread here with my presence. The real question you need to ask yourself, are you a narcissist or are you just legitimately wonderful? I think there is nothing wrong with being awesome. If you are in the club, than good for you! To be honest, I can’t help but think that I’m a little better than you. Though it is nice to know someone who is understanding of my plight.

I mean, I’m more than just a handsome love machine, I have a mind! Sure, I’m pretty outstanding but I’m so much more than my abyss of wisdom and my glimmering countenance. Why can’t the less fortunate see that in us? People just get jealous and hateful all the time. I don’t mean to rub it in just by entering a room. Anyway, just continue to be your fantastic self and try to help the little people along the way.

I stopped drinking tea, which I love, because it was staining my teeth. Does that count as narcissism?

drhat77's avatar

@DWW25921 I was certain to reference your thread. Us narcissists need to stick together.

I’m awesome and perfect! Just ask me, I’ll tell you.

Seriously, my self esteem is pretty low. It’s something that I’m working on.

flutherother's avatar

I don’t use mirrors much because once I start looking I can’t stop.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ You do have a smug look on your face. lol

Coloma's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake

Agreed, in the “otic” zone, neurotics are preferable, any day of the week to psychotics.
They may be annoying with their constant anxiety ridden angst and obsessions over stupid things, but at least they are not evil. lol

drhat77's avatar

Neurotics are worse. Still can’t find a facility that accepts commitment of neurotics. So I have to tolerate their interminable jabbering.

augustlan's avatar

Maybe. A teeny bit. ;)

johnpowell's avatar

Really, the world would be better if we all thought we were amazing.

The problems start when you think others are below you.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ True, that.
We should never downplay our strengths just to appease others frailties.

DWW25921's avatar

@Coloma “We should never downplay our strengths just to appease others frailties.”

That’s the greatest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

Coloma's avatar

@DWW25921 Haha..why thank you…just came out that way. Guess I’m in a space of clarity or something.

DWW25921's avatar

@Coloma Feel free to discuss your greatness. After all, this is a question on narcissism and self promotion is on topic!

Sometimes I do get depressed but it isn’t because I’m not satisfied with who I am. It’s generally a reaction to the stupidity of others.

Coloma's avatar

@DWW25921 Hey….is it really necessary to discuss my greatness, I think it speaks for itself. lol

DWW25921's avatar

@Coloma Clearly. However it’s a good topic to bring up as your presence can encourage the less fortunate to better themselves.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ LOL you’re in fine form today
