Do you wait before going to a newly opened restaurant?

Asked by christine215 (3173points) September 30th, 2013

Chef Jose Garces is opening another new restaurant in Philadelphia. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed three of his places that we’ve been to so far, and I’m excited to visit the new one; however my husband thinks that you should always wait about a month after opening to go to a new restaurant so that they can work out the “kinks” and so that it’s not so overly crowded.

Do you wait before going to a newly opened place and if so, how long do you wait?

I always like trying a new restauraunt the first week it’s opened, and then I like to go in the next few months to see if there are any noticeable differences.

Usually I do. I think your husband’s reasoning is sound on both counts.

To avoid a crowd, I might wait. However, I’m more likely to go at a time that won’t be crowded, such as a Tuesday night, if I’m really excited about the place. Restaurants are so clean and pretty when they first open, and the servers don’t hate their jobs yet. This makes for a pleasant experience.

It’ll be packed the first few months. That’s what happened to our new Olive Garden. Wait a few months unless you want to deal with huge crowds and hurried food.

Yes….always a wait period for me. Even if I’ve loved the chef or the place for a long time, I wait.

No, there are several new eats on my towns local, historic Main St.
This one is deeelicious….I like to support local biz. in my historic community. We have some great places around here, always quality.
My fav. lunch here, their BLT with avocado and cream cheese…superb.

If I am invited to the soft opening I go. Otherwise, I tend to wait a month or more.

If it appeals to me (and I’m hungry enough), I’ll go to a new restaurant 10 minutes after it opens.

I do. The last time I went to a new restaurant on the first week was pretty bad.
We ordered our drinks and the guy brought them. Then about 25 minutes later, he came by and grabbed my glass, my SIL glass and the man behind us glass to refill with water. When he came back with them I asked if he knew which glass went to which person. He started giggling and said no, but left them anyway.
He didn’t take our order at that time.
We finally flagged down another waiter and he said “oh your waiter was caught snorting cocaine in the bathroom and got fired. I’ll see if someone else can wait on this section.”

I realize that was probably not the norm, but I still give the new restaurant a month or so to break in new wait staff.

@chyna haha..but what a great story, and kudos for total honesty from the other waiter.

I would probably go to one of his other restaurants for the first week or two, just to avoid the crowds at the new place. Especially if they have the same items on the menu.

Yes. We live in a college town and those young, ignorant kids feel the need to experience every new experience they can so we usually wait until the majority of them are gone for summer or Christmas vacation.

I also do not feel the need to go to the first showing of ANY movie. WTH! it will be there for another two weeks and probably more.
