What music do you think I might like based on this...

Hello all. I’ve been listening to a few songs endlessly. They’re so great I could happily keep listening, but I should look for something new, too.

Maybe you will have some suggestions.

So…

I’ve had Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel on almost constant repeat lately. Her singing, the jazz influence, the percussion, the piano…I’m hooked. Musically, this is A LOT more interesting than most stuff I hear.

Also, Tune-Yards’ W H O K I L L really surprises me every time I hear it (which is a lot!). Merrill Garbus’ sampling herself right on stage, singing and playing as her own little orchestra is amazing. And her composition seems way beyond normal.

And lastly, I picked up Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark and was wowed all over again. I loved this as a teenager when it was new and forgot about it for a few decades. Wow.

Any thoughts?

Those are some pretty interesting and eclectic songs, so it’s hard to say. I don’t know too many songs with complex arrangements like that. But it seems like you’re into female vocalists with character, so here you go:

Neko Case

PJ Harvey

You might also like Dory Previn. Mythical Kings and Iguanas is my favorite from her, and in the eighties, it was even a part of my repertoire.

I really like The Idler Wheel. Ever try something completely different, like Classical?

@ETpro I listen to a lot of classical. Also jazz, and alt-country. And tons of other stuff.

But these three struck me as similar in my mind, and I was curious what they might bring to mind.

Thanks and more ideas, please, everyone!

I like your taste. :)

If you like Fiona Apple, you might try Amanda Palmer or Regina Spektor (her album “Far” might be a good place to start if you don’t know her… but she’s put out a wide variety of stuff over the years).

And… not quite in the style of what you’ve listed here, but I think you might really enjoy this – a band called Land of Talk (they’re a particular favourite of mine). The album that this song kicks off is called Cloak and Cipher, and their earlier Applause, Cheer, Hiss, Boo is also brilliant. Both are wonderfull all the way through; I return to these again and again.

@Haleth Have you heard Neko Case’s latest CD? I think it’s the best thing she’s done in a while. Here’s a standout track.

Hmmm

I have a ton of Neko Case. She was in town at a really small venue last month and I sadly couldn’t go.

And now I have some new [to me] tunes to check out. Thanks!
