Fair price of pistol and what should I look for?

I am interested in getting a pistol just to shoot at ranges with and personal protection.
He said fired about 1,200 rounds with it. He is a solider as well, so I am not too worried about anything shady with buying it. But still I’ll be cautious.
$250 – Ruger SR22. Includes 2 10 rnd mags with hard case and lock.
I was thinking $200, but is $250 about fair?
Any questions I should ask about pistol or be aware of?

What state are you in, do you need a permit? The price sounds on the low end for a Ruger, but it has had quite a few rounds through it.
@Adirondackwannabe I am in AK. From what I know that shouldn’t be an issue, probably more hassle getting registered on post. I tried look around they seem to go 300–400 dollars new.
You aren’t seriously thinking about buying a .22 for protection, are you? Buy the gun for target / range shooting if you like, but don’t expect to buy much protection from that weapon.
Is there a gun shop in your area where you can compare prices for other used pistols? They might be able to give you a ballpark figure for a reasonable price, and they might even be willing to tell you what to look for in terms of maintenance, mechanical wear and tear, and how well it has been cleaned.
Sounds good at $200 here in Missouri.
@LDRSHIP Yeah, I saw $399 for new so $200 sounds good.. I’m in NY, lots of hoops to jump through. :(
Fair warning. No background checks are being processed until the government turns back on.

Gunbroker.com (like eBay for guns) shows recent sales from $255 to $285 for a used SR22.
And a few new ones for $325 to $385.
@CWOTUS raises a valid point. There is not much punch in a 22 for protection. You want something that will get their attention even if your aim is a little off.
For range shooting in .22 i think a MK 3 would be better. I cant comment on personal protection thou, since that is not relevant for me.
A Ruger SR22 is a .22LR pistol. While that may be ideal for the range, you might want something that packs a little bit more of a punch for protection. If you are partial towards the Ruger brand, then I recommend the Ruger LC9. That is a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, and the 9mm round, like the .22LR round is very common and easy to buy. Also, the Glock 19 is a good 9mm pistol as well. You could also go with the .38 special for personal protection as well, if you want a revolver. The Smith & Wesson Model 637 is a great little, snub-nosed revolver, chambered for .38 special. I own both the LC9 and the Model 637, and I did own a Glock 19 as well.
For defense you’ll want a .380 or larger round. 22lr is a plinking/pesting round and you’ll have a hard time finding it right now anyway.
