I go to school for music business, and in one of my classes we are having a guest speaker. The woman who is coming in works at Spotify, I’m not sure what her title is exactly, but I know she works with record labels that try to get their song on Spotify. I’m assuming she deals with the mechanical rights of the songs so they can be legally played…blah blah blah. Although I find what she does awesome, I really don’t know what I should be asking her. I always have questions for guest speakers but I am drawing a blank on this one. thanks

Try starting with the basics of journalism- who, what, where, why, and how. Then as she answers you’ll be able to branch out. Here are some examples of what kinds of questions you could ask.
If I were a record producer and I wanted to get exposure for a new artist, on Spotify, how would I go about making it happen?
How long have you been in this business? If it’s a long time, ask: Have things changed in the industry since you started?
How many kinds of music do you play on Spotify?
If there were one word to describe Spotify, what would it be?
I’m sure you’ve met many interesting people. Who was the most interesting?
What sorts of problems do you deal with concerning legal issues and copyright laws?
I’d try to find a way to ask about the future of Spotify and other streaming type services without forcing her into whatever the company line is.
Maybe something like
Where do you see music distribution headed and how will that affect the relationship between labels and individual artists?
or
Do you think album and single sales are always going to be the primary metrics for success? Do you think Spotify and other services will change that?
It lets her talk about her views instead of Spotify’s, so she’s not putting anyone else “out there”.
She may actually say something you can use when you get out of school.
Ask her to compare Spotify with the Payola scandals of the 1950’s.
Ask her how much of the sales the record company keeps from the artists.
@ragingloli I could tell you that, haha. Shes more on the Spotify end.
UPDATE : Her job is Director of Label Relations
What about her position on the word Nigger in music? Is she willing to not associate with any artist that uses the word?
