Any epileptics have experience with Imax movies?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29885points) October 4th, 2013

epilepsy.com shows they can cause seizures.

Does anyone have experience to share?

My mom has epilepsy. She can’t tolerate movies in a theater, strobe lights, or watching people play video games. I’m thinking that IMAX would be no bueno for a person with epilepsy.

@Katniss Yeah, hubs is so mad he can’t go see Gravity with George Clooney, but I read about it today and it’s pretty sure that there’s a correlation.

Even police strobes bother him after his two seizures last year, so guess we better skip it.

We actually sold our Wii and all our games, too, but computer doesn’t seem to bother him.

Movies in a regular theatre bother her? Hmmm, haven’t heard that one. Has she ever seized during one by chance?

@KNOWITALL Gravity looks great. That’s really too bad that you’ll have to skip it. Better safe than sorry though.

As far as watching movies in a theater, it’s more of a precautionary thing for her. She’s never had a seizure in a theater, but she’s afraid she might so she’s just skips it all together.

She doesn’t have any problems with a computer either.

@Katniss That website says one guy had 3 during an Imax, 2 outside and more at the hospital. So yeah, not taking any chances with his freakin’ life for a movie- lol, thanks!

@KNOWITALL It’s really not worth it and I don’t blame you one bit! I wouldn’t risk it either.

The way movies are filmed now I wouldn’t be surprised if watching any movie in the theater is a problem. Movies tend to have much more light and camera zoom changes than ever before, I hate it myself and I don’t have epilepsy. IMAX would just amp up the whole thing being such a large screen.

I would guess having the lights on while watching a movie would mean it is much less likely to trigger a seizure, but that is just guessing, I don’t know that to be true. Then the light effects would have much less impact on the brain.

My nephew, who is an epileptic, says that he takes no chances and simply avoids iMax.
