What is the biggest spider web you've ever seen?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47127points) October 4th, 2013

Mine would be this one.. and here. The little guy built it from a tree to the garage roof. His guy wires were so thick they looked like steel.

About 10×10 feet, completely blocking a hiking trail, from tree to tree across the path. Big-ass wolf spider. Harmless.

We have zipper spiders (black and yellow garden spiders) in my neck of the woods, and they often construct very large webs. I’d say the largest I’ve seen is probably 4×4 feet. That 10×10 web spotted by Espiritus_Corvus is quite impressive!

My dad had a friend who had a tarantula. The venom is taken out of them when they’re sold as pets, but they can still bite, and apparently it hurts like mad. I handled the tarantula, being careful not to agitate it. Interesting little buggers, they are.

Never mind the size, I just wish I would see the ones I walk into in the woods, instead of feeling them drape across my face!

Along a highway in Florida was a sign for a spider walk or something like that. We stopped to explore and there were very large webs 4 feet in diameter. Spiders of many colors. Fascinating. I know a lot of people, mostly women, shriek when they see a spider. I’ve never understood that. It’s not like they’re going to chase you or jump at you.. You’re bigger than they are.

@Sunny2 Spiders are awesome, I was never scared of them. I will be careful around them because some can bite, others are poisonous. Maybe not so much in Canada, but I know we have black widows here, which are supposed to be hardcore…but I never shrieked when I saw a spider. Incidentally, I know a whole lot of men who are afraid of them, too.

Some spiders will confront you @Sunny2!

^^^ Guess I never met any of those. How will I recognize them? Where do they live and what do they look like?
@Symbeline I don’t handle them. I just look at them.

When I still lived at my parents’ house, I would learn to be very cautious exiting the house in the morning to catch the bus to school. Often there would be webs that would stretch across the porch, or cover the entire frame of the front door. Walked through too many of those nasties to not learn to watch my step.
To this day, if I am walking at my parents’ house outside after dark, I walk with my hand stretched in front of me so that I can at least get it with my hand and not my face. Yuck.

They look like tarantulas. They’ll stamp at you if they’re threatened, or feel threatened @Sunny2.

I saw one that was primarily from a tree to a fence, but a little support runner was actually going up to a phone line, holding up one of the corners.
I was wondering what if it went to a power line, and it was dewy morning.

We had one that every night would rappel down from the peak of the roof over the second story and attach to the good of the car. You could pluck it like a guitar string. We never saw the spider, but the web was there every morning.

I don’t know, um, I’d say it was about yay big.

Berserker's avatar

Er, erm. I apologize. I guess I had too much coffee, but I read ’‘what’s the biggest spider you’ve seen’’. Never saw the word web in it. oops

Omg I hate spiders. I’m terrified of them. I scream like a little bitch when I see one. It’s awful.

Sunny2's avatar

@Symbeline Thank you. I think I’d just naturally keep back from a spider that big. I’m not really interested in letting a spider touch me and vice versa. I’m just interested in how they live their lives (like the trapdoor spider and wrapping up their prey to eat another day.)

trailsillustrated's avatar

HATE em and if you want see big spiders they are in australia.

@Katniss I scream like a little bitch when I see one.

K dude, that was bloody hilarious. XD

On a woodland path in Alabama I came across a giant web about four feet high and three wide glistening in the sun and completely blocking my path. I didn’t see the spider and I just stopped and went back the way I came.

Had a yellow garden spider that made a web covering half of the back yard patio. I couldn’t give you absolute dimensions, but it was longer than my outstretched hands and taller than I am (6’2”).

I would recommend having one. They don’t do anything except sit in the center of the web except in the early mornings when she goes around fixing and replacing bits of the web. And taking care of trapped insects. Also, very little in the way of flies and mosquitoes that summer.

@Symbeline LOL!!!! Well thank you! You should see it in person!

(The question was about spider webs, not spiders.)

(It’s spam. Apparently spam extends even to the world of spider sales.)

Dutchess_III's avatar

(What defines something as spam? I thought spam was people trying to get you to buy stuff or to advertise. He’s not selling spiders, I don’t think!)

dappled_leaves's avatar

(He went to every thread he could find that talked about spiders and posted the same links to a pet store. It’s spam.)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh. Well I didn’t see a pet store listed on his post here. Must have missed it.
