Do I have the freedom to say that I believe that I am a 47 googolplex year old psychic, or intuitive, time traveler.

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) October 6th, 2013

In Fluther, how far does freedom of belief go? Can I believe this without having to prove it to anyone? I can’t even prove it to my mom, so it’s not going to be easily to prove. So can I hold a belief with some idea that is hard to prove?

Yes. Knock yourself out. However, if you ever get into a serious confrontation with the Good Humor boys, you might want to withhold that opinion of yourself. “Some things are better left unsaid.”

You are free to say and believe whatever you want, which you surely already know.

You might just not want to say that your wife is dead and that you are having sex with her niece here.

Sure!

Now, getting people to believe you is an entirely different matter.

@janbb Make that anal sex with the niece.

You may say anything you like as long as the spelling and grammar are correct. And, who knows, you may find someone who believes the same thing! Find two more and you can start a club.

@chyna that’s anal sex with de’ nephew.

@Sunny2 Four or more and it’s a movement!

^^Right! I see them coming up the block with a banner and a loud speaker as we speak.

In my youth I could believe six impossible things before breakfast.

We can’t really stop you from believing something, just like you can’t force us to believe you.

You have the freedom to say it, and the rest of us have the freedom to mercilessly ridicule you for it.

^ I agree that you can say it. But the rest.. no. You can’t believe it. I don’t know why but go ahead and try to believe it and you’ll see what I mean. It just doesn’t work. And in fact, I think it would be easier to trick us into believing it than it would be to get yourself to actually believe it.

Of course you have the freedom to say it and believe it. But we have the freedom to doubt it, to question it, and to ask for proof. Freedom of speech is not freedom to say whatever one likes without criticism or consequences. What people frequently seem to forget around here is that making an asserting in a public forum makes it a topic for discussion. It opens one up to questions and criticism. Assertion of a claim is a form of putting oneself on the line.

In any case, the claims you make are ones that should be subject to proof. If you really had the powers you say you have, there would be actions you could take to demonstrate them to others. That you cannot even convince your own mother, then, is strong evidence that you do not have these powers. No wonder you refuse to even try proving them to us.

You can believe what you want. And you can say what you want. But I don’t have to believe it. And I don’t have to withhold my disbelief.

Sure, but only if I can say that I’m a 5’10 supermodel with millions of dollars. :0)

Milo says that you have his permission to say that.

You believe what you want to believe. The thoughts in your head cannot be controlled by anyone, at least not here, not now.
