Would it keep elected officials out of the pockets of big money? Or would it fall flat on its face? Would it be a one time viral stunt? Or could it be sustainable? What problems could you foresee?

It could work, if it was set up properly. And if it worked once it would be repeated by other candidates.
It would take a pretty big organization though to keep it going. And it could not be the sole source of funds But it could be very significant.
I don’t think it would be allowable under the rules of kickstarter. I think you need to actually provide a good or service.
@johnpowell… And at the $5000 level, I will come to your function to deliver a speech.
Eh? Eh? plus what service is more noble than the civil variety?
I believe other sites have less of a product focus.
So something like indiegogo.com might be a better choice for your campaign funding.

This actually made me laugh.
It might work for a local campaign or one for a minor state office. Anything past that, and these days the campaign costs are in the millions. @funkdaddy‘s Indiegogo.com suggestion is a good one.
The Supreme Corporatists are hearing a case today that may blow the final lid of any limit in the corruption now rampant in government by allowing individual donors to give millions instead of the currently stifling $123,500 aggregate limit in an election cycle. It looks like nothing short of pure plutocracy is enough “liberty” for the 5 con men of the court, who seem to think the Founders only meant liberty and free speech to apply to the highest bidder.
