Meta Question

Why are people so quick to disregard and sometimes take offence to answers that don't conform to societal "norms"?

Asked by flip86 (6213points) October 10th, 2013

I’ve had answers moderated that were not vulgar or antagonistic which were on topic. They simply didn’t conform to the typical cookie cutter answer.

Everyone has their trigger issues, usually having to do with their own mixed emotions on a particular topic.
I, while being a well adjusted, emotionally stable type, totally believe in ones right to commit suicide, be that due to a painful and chronic or terminal illness or, simply because a person has decided they have had enough of life and wish to check out.
My opinion on this topic is not a popular one. My argument is that I think it entirely possible that a person can consciously choose to die without being mentally ill or depressed.

Any controversial subject is bound to ruffle feathers, especially taboo topics that challenge everyones diehard conditioning and programming.

[Mod says] Moved to Meta

It’s impossible for us to comment since we don’t know what quips you’re talking about. I would contact the moderation team with a polite question at each occurrence for an explanation – there may be something in the guidelines that you are not familiar with.

@Coloma But the question is about answers being modded not why some opinions are unpopular.

Oh…well…not enough coffee yet…never mind then. lol

I think you would need to provide specific examples if you want us to comment. Or talk to the mods about those answers. Also… when you say “people”, do you mean other jellies, or the mods? Because even if “people” disregard or take offence at your quips, and flag them for modding, that doesn’t automatically mean the quip will be removed.

@janbb It isn’t specifically about questions being modded. My details were just an example.

@thorninmud: ”[Mod says] Moved to Meta”

When @thorninmud does this, I always read it as “Moved to Mettā”.

I think @glacial‘s request for clarification is important: do you mean the moderators take offense and remove the comments unjustly or do you mean that users, in general, get offended too easily?

Because I can promise you that moderators do not remove comments because we are personally offended or dislike a particular idea. I have been offended by certain threads that I did not touch as they were not breaking the Guidelines in any way. I have also removed comments that I was not offended by in the slightest, but as they did break the Guidelines they had to be removed.

As for the general issue of users being offended by answers outside the norm, that’s how real life is, too. I have many ideals that do not conform to the norm, and often find myself shut down by other people when I try to talk about them. I imagine that I do the same to them, from time to time, if their ideas are outside my norm. It can make people uncomfortable to be presented an idea that is in opposition to what they are accustomed to or desire.

It’s also important to keep in mind that we are in a completely text-based environment on Fluther. Sometimes users might read the same post a dozen different ways because each of us has to interpret what the tone of it is in addition to its contextual meaning. Where some might read antagonism, others might not.

Society is a “The Emperor Has No Clothes” situation – the only reason it exists is because we all believe it should. If a critical mass started to believe contrarily, society may fall apart rapidly. I don’t know if it actually would, but I think that is the fear. And the critical mass doesn’t have to be very high, they just have to be very localized to get the wave of collapse going.
I think that’s why annonymous gets talked about in hushed tones, people are worried that they might achieve the critical mass to bring it all down to the ground.
‘Mind you, this is all going on subconsciously.
The way societies prevent this is ostracization of nonconforming elements. This either compels them to get back in line so that they may rejoin society, or sequester them, so they can never achieve critical mass in an uncontrolled fashion.
This is the other reason anonymous pushes our button – they cannot be ostracized!

If I had a question about why a particular answer was modded, I would as a mod.

I see answers that I consider to be way out of line, such as advising people to kill someone but they stay up.

Well, if fish had wings we’d all be speaking Latin now. And I say that with the highest authority. This does not include Perch. If Perch had wings we’d have an incredible new item for our menu. Speaking of menu, I think it should be called a womenu. And, forget about asking for applesauce. A’int going to happen. And those condom machines in the bathrooms? They should be free.
