Is it broken?

Asked by Seek (34808points) October 10th, 2013

Two days ago, I was helping my son get dressed for school. I was leaning over him, holding his jeans for him to step into (he can dress himself, he’s just not a morning person) when he jumped, head-butting me squarely in the nose.

Ow.

Now, there was no bleeding, no obvious bruising (and I’m a bruiser) or external swelling , but I’m experiencing sinus congestion, and the bridge of my nose, right between my eyes and eyebrows, is terribly sore.

Is this something that requires attention of some sort? Or will it just take a while to heal?

Probably not – probably just a bad bruise even though there’s no discoloration. Have you looked up symptoms of a broken nose?

Of course you should go to a doctor but I know there are some issues with that for you.

Most likely not, with no swelling. About a month ago I was trying to close my bedroom blinds from in bed and was propped up on one arm reaching for the blinds and my arm gave out and I fell, nose first, into the windowsill. OW!
I was totally out of it, just before dawn, and I was waiting for the blood to start gushing. Never happened, just a severely sore nose with a little cut red mark across the bridge that hurt for several weeks.

You’re probably fine, and maybe your sinus congestion is part of the fall allergy scene, I know I am suffering with sinus issues right now too.

The lining of bones, periosteum, is very sensitive even to minimal injury. But even if it is broken, with out deformity or difficulty breathing no one would do anything besides let it heal

If it is broken, it doesn’t sound like a serious break. Take some aspirin and keep a bandage on it to keep it from being hit again. It should feel better in a couple of weeks.

Ouch! But doesn’t sound like it is broken. It will be ouchy for a few days though.

Probably not. I have had it broken twice, and it is pretty unambiguous.

You’ll be ok. Make sure your next kid has a softer head.

@DWW25921 – yeah, this is the kid who jumped off the couch and shattered the fish tank with his forehead when he was a year old. Hard head.

Quick!!! Take pictures!!! Tomorrow you will look all bruised!!!

In court, those pics will be irrefutable evidence of abuse if you ever need it. :-)

I’d say get him a helmet….but he’s not the one we’re worried about!

@Seek_Kolinahr Get you one of those Klingon prosthetic things…

Right after my daughter was born I got braces on my teeth again. BIG mistake. After a couple of months she was at that age where she’d throw her head back unexpectedly. I walked around with busted lips for 4 months.

ooowww. I hope it feels better soon. Try a hot moist towel on your face for the congestion. In the meantime, wear a hockey mask. It will protect you, and you will look like the coolest mom.

I woke up at 4 a.m. with my nose hurting in sympathy… :( It’s one of those things you can just FEEL. Like, once when my daughter was about 7 she was playing with some other friends on that round spinny thing where kids ride and another kid or two push everyone around and around. She fell off once while it was still spinning fast. She didn’t realize that her leg had fallen under the ride and when she tried to get up it shoved her knee right back down, hard, into the gravel! It was a mess. Just thinking about it makes me tingle in awfulness too.

Thanks, Val. It hurts really bad today. I think I might have gotten whacked again at the concert Wednesday night. I don’t remember – which happens a lot when I go out corseted. The bartenders start making my G&Ts into martinis, haha.

@cazzie – egads, could you just see me going to wake him up for school in a hockey mask? It’s time for school, darling! Raaahhh!

Poor baby! Is it all bruised and swollen?

Seek's avatar

I can feel the swelling, but it’s not obvious. No bruising either. Just ouchy.

I know how to fix it. Get on a play ground merry go round, fall off while it’s spinning, then try to get up….you’ll forget all about your nose!
