The key quote in this piece is from Cindy Vinson.
“Of course, I want people to have health care,” Vinson said. “I just didn’t realize I would be the one who was going to pay for it personally.”
I would rather not have the question be all about Obama care. My objections to it aside, I don’t think there is anything wrong with insisting that people buy a medical plan, rather than soaking the system for free.
My question is, what makes people imagine that what they want and need should be paid for by somebody else? Why did Cindy think that?

The “system” is already soaked, with corruption, greed and a “wealthy= healthy” set up.
America is one of the wealthiest nations yet our healthcare is woefully lacking for those that cannot afford hundreds and hundreds a month for a decent healthcare plan.
Pretty pathetic when the heroes of 9–11 have to get care for their illnesses in Cuba because this country was happy for them to risk life and limb in a national disaster yet would do nothing to relieve them of their health issues for their noble deeds.
The government can insist on one buying a health plan, but tthey can’t enforce such a policy if the person cannot afford it.
You can’t get blood from a Turnip, no matter how hard you try, and as one of millions of self employed people in this country that can’t afford a decent policy, well….I say ” Go Cindy!”
WTF! Humans should not have to fear than an accident or illness is going to devastate them.
With all the bullshit spending our government justifies don;t tell me we can’t find a way to universal health, for all.
Why the hell should I worry about “soaking” the government when they have soaked me for fucking decades. lol
Pffft…. “medicine” is no longer a practice, it is a business that excludes millions.
I agree. Let’s leave the ACA out of it.
@josie: “My question is, what makes people imagine that what they want and need should be paid for by somebody else?”
I have no idea. Fucking freeloaders. They’re always wanting things like police and fire to paid for by me! I pay for that shit. Why should some unemployed father of 2 get the same fire services that I get – when I pay for it!?! Fuck him.
Or what about all of this douchebags who hardly pay any taxes at all and are using the roads that I pay for? These shit whores should have to pay for these roads before driving their broken-down shitboxes on my fucking roads!
Or the goddamn military. So these unemployed lazy assholes want me to pay for their military too? Fuck off, commie. Go find youself another country to live in. This one is protected by services paid for by my wallet.
I don’t need to go on. I think we’re on the same page.
@tom_g
Funny…
I had no idea we had so much in common.
Seriously, though. I’m an asshole. Flag the post if you want. I’m recovering from surgery, but I’m not sure that can be used as an excuse. Just had a moment.
I get all that. But why can’t we have a Department of Health that is run exactly like the Department of Defense?
We’ve got the best war machine in the world… and no one pays out of pocket for it.
We should have the best health machine in the world too… and I see no reason it couldn’t be run the same.
Can you imagine…
“We’re going to war folks… So everyone has to buck up an extra $50 per month.”
Which is more important, our killing machine, or our healing machine? Our current emphasis seems so ancient and primitive to me. I mean… It’s 2013 folks! When does our species evolve away from war and towards compassion?
I think what Cindy was saying was that they already have health insurance. They didn’t realize that their premiums were going to go up because of the ACA.
But, in Cindys defense, I believe she was surprised to find that SHE would pay for someone elses, not that SHE was going to get something for free.
It’s about a stitch in time saving nine. IF we pay now for someone’s blood pressure control, we won’t be paying much more down the road because of their heart attack. because we do not tolerate people dying in the street, we will pay for their heart attack care even if they cannot.
Because I’m medical, I see the stitch in time in this scenario, but it is difficult to see because we do not see who we are saving – that will always be a mystery. So it’s a nebulous concept that is difficult to internalize, you can only see it on actuary tables. There are probably examples that can be made with other public services and the stitch in time paradigm, but I’m not in it enough to see what they are.
Right @rojo. But Cindy was a little ignant then. I mean, where did she think the money was going to come from?
Also, that is what insurance in general is. You paying for someone elses healthcare.
The premiums you pay are used to pay someone elses treatment, and when you get sick yourself, someone else’s money is being used for your treatment.
Yes, as @rojo says, Cindy is complaining about the rise in her premiums, which would seem to be paying for other’s new-found benefits.
