What are Fluther's plans for the future?

Asked by Eggie (5926points) October 13th, 2013

Fluther in my personal point of view is a great site, because you get to see so much interesting stuff about people and you learn so much. It makes me wonder, how does Fluther plan to advance in the future? Do you guys have any interesting plans to make the site more user friendly (not that it is not user friendly already.)?

There is no development being done on the site since the owners have moved on to other jobs. They are maintaining the servers and trouble shooting out of the goodness of their bountiful hearts.

So does this mean that Fluther would not last in the future, that eventually it will shut down?

janbb's avatar

Probably – but we hope not for a long time.

Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if it’s a consolation it’s been at least a few years since they were actively involved in development and it’s still going on.

Not in the least because of the gracious, over-worked, exceptionally patient, linguistically gifted and underpaid (slave wages; two lumps of coal and a crust of bread monthly) manager, @Augustlan.

Yeah, no plans at all, and if there are, it certainly won’t be right away. On the bright side, the founders did say before going off to Twitter that there are also no plans, or reason, to shut down Fluther, least for the time being.

I don’t think it costs more than it makes from ad revenue. (Log out and turn off ad-block.. There are tons of ads). I don’t think they are rolling in cash but it probably doesn’t lose money. If they can break-even and only do a few hours a week keeping it going I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

One reason would be that eventually Auggie may simply say, “Enough.” Some of the whingers and carpers don’t seem to understand that even she has a breaking point.

Not following the guidelines solely out of malice, for example, rapidly looses its charm, as does the occasional really nasty spammer.

And of course, the valiant volunteer mods, speaking of thankless jobs. Their endurance seems to last an average of four months.

@gailcalled Can others do some of the things that need to be done? Is there anything I can do? I don’t want to see Fluther collapse!

@dxs PM Auggie, I believe she can always use more Mods.

I think Uncle Ben would know more than I… (I think that’s an inside joke, not sure.) Maybe they just want to hang out and see what happens. I think it would be cool if they added a swimming pool so us jellies could hang out some time.

How would the founders look at creating a Kickstarter program to buy it from Twitter, put together a development team, and figure out how to monetize it so it would reaming a self sufficient web destination?

Buttonstc's avatar

@ET

Buy it from Twitter ?

I was under the impression that Fluther was NOT part of the deal when they hired Bendrew.

Did I miss something?

janbb's avatar

@Buttonstc You are right. It is not owned by Twitter; Ben and Andrew kept Fluther; Twitter just “bought” the development team.

Maybe the Auggie can introduce brand name items like nike and jordans to sell as fluther stuff to get revenue?

augustlan's avatar

I love you guys.

ETpro's avatar

@Buttonstc Even better. Twitter would want a bazillion dollars for it even without any revenue stream. We really might be able to get something going if Twitter’s not a part of the bargain.
