How often do you have a take away meal?

Asked by Headhurts (4505points) October 13th, 2013

There are always reports on tv and in papers that we eat too many takeaways, that we are lazy.
We have a takeaway once every 3 week. I work one Saturday in 3 and that Saturday we go and get a takeaway.

How about you?

Pretty often, I work in a restaurant, so I sometimes grab a meal from there, or go to Subway which isn’t too far from where I work. This is reserved for lunch usually, but Subway seems to find itself on my menu quite often.

Coloma's avatar

Not as much as I used to, with being tanked by this economy the last few years, however…I do still get takeout once or twice a month. Most recently, a few nights ago. Two stops, one for a gourmet salad and another for a shrimp cocktail. Then..I bought my own avocado, spinach dip and french bread to go with my takeout goodies.

Deeelicious dinner!

Rarely; a few times a year, I suppose. Sometimes when I make long-distance drives (hundreds of miles in a day), then I’ll stop for a burger and fries, but not even then, as a rule. When I know I’m going to make that drive, then I’ll usually carry some easy-to-snack food in the car with me, such as a container of dry cereal, or trail mix or even some pre-packed sandwiches from home.

Probably about the same as you – once every few weeks. I rarely go out and get “takeaway” though; I usually order in. If I’m going to go out to get a meal, I’ll probably stay and eat at the restaurant.

Out of 21 meals a week?

Five lunches. Three breakfasts. Maybe one dinner. But I eat out at restaurants a lot.

I never get fast food, if I get take out it is still slow food.

Seek's avatar

A lot. It’s often less expensive than buying ingredients and preparing food at home. I can rarely afford to buy in bulk these days.

muppetish's avatar

Rarely, if I can help it. When I was in graduate school, sometimes I had to eat fast food often due to time constraints. I felt so unhealthy. Now that I am out of school and working part-time, I cook at home more often and eat out less. Though now and then I’ll get the urge for something and will go out to eat with my significant other.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Almost every weekday
I’m too lazy to get up early and make my own breakfast, so I just get a coffee and a sandwich from a stand.

YARNLADY's avatar

Maybe once or twice a month. I never go out and get one myself, but I will occasionally ask another family member to pick something up for me if they are getting for themselves.

Berserker's avatar

@Michael_Huntington If we’re talking about just coffee, I get some every day from work. But you know, it’s like, I’m already there, and it costs one dollar for a small coffee, so…:D

rojo's avatar

four out of seven days, sometimes more.

is that too many?

Fast food…yuck..maybe twice a year for me. For my teenage boys probably once or twice a week after school or football practice when they’re starving and cannot wait for dinner. Since I work 12 hour shifts I don’t make dinner on those days but onn my off days I always make sure they always have a home cooked meal. Otherwise..we dine in.

I buy a lot of home-made vegetarian soups at our local food coop. They use local produce and do all the chopping, dicing and peeling.

@zenvelo: “Slow food” is the perfect term.

Fast food; probably not in 10 years. I tried a Subway salad the other day and threw it out…tired produce and some sort of diesel engine oil for dressing.

laurenkem's avatar

Not very often, if you don’t count the blueberry muffin I get at 7–11 Monday through Friday mornings (hey, Krispy Kreme delivers them every morning!).

I just don’t like fast food

@gailcalled I’m with ya on the whole Subway thing – their food is truly disgusting.

Take away is not always fast food in my mind.

We take away probably once every two months. We almost never bring restaurant food home. We eat out in restaurants usually once a week, but sometimes two. We have fast food at most twice a month, sometimes we go a full two months or so without eating fast food.

Pachy's avatar

Once or twice a week. Not as much as I used to when I was working full time, but more than I probably should. Usually Chinese or Vietnamese.

flutherother's avatar

I order a takeaway once every two or three months. I eat out in restaurants about once every ten days.I get flyers through the door every week for Chinese, Indian, Greek, Italian you name it.

hearkat's avatar

We get pizza about once a week. We also go out for Chinese, ramen or sushi once a week – but those we eat at the restaurant. My commute is 45 miles each way, his is 55. He usually gets out of work between 5:30–6:00, and I work until 6:30–7:00 (or later) two nights a week.

We typically bring luches, though – either leftovers from weekend homemade meals or frozen meals, like Amy’s organics. We brew our morning coffee at home and eat organic granola/cereal bars on our drive in for breakfast.

@zenvelo and @gailcalledslow food is a food movement against processed and pre-fab fast foods; it is also used to refer to roasted and smoked items cooked “slow and low”.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

We get a pizza and wings or subs of some sort almost every Friday. After working all week neither of us really feel like cooking. We haven’t touched fast food, like Mc D’s, Arby’s etc in over 20 years.

Coloma's avatar

Well…it is often LESS expensive to eat out than make your own. My salad, shrimp cocktail ( 6 large shrimp ), avocado, french bread, spinach dip and a carton of blackberries cost me a whopping $28 for my dinner. :-/
So much for making healthy food at home. I shoulda gone for the chinese takeout and saved the $20, however…some choice, twenty dollars poorer for one dinner or 20 extra pounds on my ass from egg rolls, rice and chow mien

Fortune say ” It is a wise woman who not eat too much chow mien”.lol

glacial's avatar

There are other choices, though, @Coloma. I get by on a lot less than $8 per meal, by buying fresh veggies and making stir fries and soups. A pot of soup will last several meals, and can be made up of stuff that was going to be thrown out otherwise.

Coloma's avatar

@glacial Oh yeah, I make lots of soups, chili, etc. I love soup making! I was just referring to those times you think some yummy little snack dinner is going to be less expensive than going out.

Bah! I’m sitting in a house with a fridge full of food and I just got back from Hardees… Man… Talk about timing. Anyway, I shouldn’t have but I did.

downtide's avatar

Both my partner and I get home from work after 7pm so we get a takeaway on pretty much every day that we both work (usually 3 days a week). But we have a lot of choice in our local area, it’s not all unhealthy and it’s not all expensive. I can get a Chinese or Thai meal here from a takeaway for less than it would cost to buy the ingredients and make it at home.

Headhurts's avatar

I didn’t realise food was so expensive in the US.
I work until 7pm two nights a week, those days, I make something in the slow cooker in the morning, ready for when I get home. I too haven’t had fast food like Burger King for about 10 years, and I have never had a McDonalds. We will go out and get fish and chips, but that is all. When I lived with my mum, we ordered in a Indian takeaway once a week.

anniereborn's avatar

Not sure of the exact definition of “takeaway”. I guess it’s just a meal you pick up and eat somewhere that’s not from home or at a restaurant?
If so….maybe once or twice a month?

hearkat's avatar

@anniereborn – I just guessed that it’s another way of saying “takeout”, which is the common term we use in the MidAtlantic.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Hubs and I get fast food about once a week or every two weeks.

He also insists on a chinese takeout night about every other week or two, other than that I cook something or he makes spaghetti.

OpryLeigh's avatar

About once a fortnight at a guess. My favourite is fish and chips but I also enjoy a domino’s pizza from time to time.

Mac D’s is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, I don’t have it often, maybe once every 3–6 months, but when I do I bloody enjoy it. My boyfriend hates everything it stands for so my enjoyment of it is one of my little (harmless) secrets!!!

Seek's avatar

McDonalds is cheap, easy, and they have free WiFi.

I often go for a cheeseburger and an iced tea, and do what I have to do online. There’s even a little alcove with a power plug on the wall where I can get some peace and quiet, which is more than I can say for our tiny small-town library. I swear that place is like a boozeless Cheers.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I’m a McNugget girl myself or a Filet of Fish if I’m really pushing the boat out (pun intended)!!!

Seek's avatar

Yeah, I love the filet-o-fish, but it’s not Dollar Menu.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr No, that’s on the more expensive meal here too so it has to be a treat rather than the norm!

Coloma's avatar

The asian McDonalds serve their fries with green wasabi mayo. It is delicious!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Coloma Oh man that sounds good.

downtide's avatar

Macdonalds “free wifi” is not actually free in the UK. Sure, it dosn’t cost actual money, but they force you to put a valid cellphone number in to activate it, and then they send you a ton of marketing text messages. Opt out, and you lose access.
