Can anyone recommend a good book for Women Climbing the Corporate Ladder?

Asked by oneSasyRN (350points) October 15th, 2013

I am in a supervisory position at work, but have manager coworkers. Above us are DON and CEO. We seem to be the “middle men” and get stuck doing the grunt work. I am back in school in an attempt to climb the corporate ladder. I am tired of the passive aggressive behavior of some of my coworkers who are intimidated by me but have no support from the “higher ups”. Any recommendations for books that would help?

When I was training to be CNO, my current CNO recommended “First break all the rules” and “Now discover your strengths”. She also recommended getting the Journal of Nursing Administration.

Personally, I think all the books in the world are nothing next to a great mentor. My CNO was definitely a great mentor for me and I learned a lot about being CNO. Being able to spend time with her in that role was better than any book I’ve read about management.

I will second the motion for good personal mentorship. You might also benefit from leanin.org—it provides several resources for women in the workforce, particularly those who aspire to leadership roles.

I am not in the nursing profession, so I can’t speak directly to your situation; but being encouraged, prodded, educated and supported by someone above you is critically important in any profession.

Thank you, unfortunately in my situation it is dog eat dog. Openings for advancement are rare, so people are cut throat. I am bettering myself for “that moment”. No mentors.

Perhaps there are mentors who sit outside the dog pound, so to speak. Do you know a woman in your immediate sphere who has achieved executive status in any profession?

I’m reading The Drunkards Walk. It is about randomness in life and how simply knowing the numbers in the game you are in can help tackle any rejection or perceived unfairness. http://www.amazon.com/The-Drunkards-Walk-Randomness-Rules/dp/0307275175
It’s a numbers game. All if it. Increasing your skills may have less to do with it than you think, but your persistence and simply how you can alter how your ‘successes’ and ‘failures’ are perceived has more to do with it.

Which direction are you looking to advance in? Are you hoping to be CNO, CEO, or something else?
