Can you message airbnb members before you make a deposit?

I found a cabin I’m very interested in renting for next weekend but I want to speak to the owner to confirm it’s availability before I book it. AirBnB isn’t letting me message him unless I make a deposit payment with my CC info. For obvious reasons I’m not comfortable with this. How can I circumvent their stupid settings?
