Can I download songs from from Youtube to a CD?

Asked by Windmill (509points) October 27th, 2013

I have a party coming up and I’d like to select the music. I’ve looked online and they have tutorial videos, but there doesn’t seem to be anyway to pause them while I try to follow along, step by step, on another page. Also, I’m worried about downloading any programs without some assurances and recommendations from “real” people (that would be you guys.)

It can be done. I used to have software that would copy whatever sound was coming out of the computer. It’s no mean trick, but it is probably illegal to do this with You Tube music, and copyrighted music.

Windmill's avatar

O. Well, shoot. I wonder if there is anyway to buy the songs then?

glacial's avatar

Copyright rules would vary depending on what the music is (I’m sure there’s lots of music under public domain, for example). In the past I’ve used YouTubeDownloader to download videos, and I believe I used advice given on this past question to convert to an mp3 once. It’s a tedious process, so I don’t get my music this way.

Try this, Windmill. When it works, it works great…

Most of the major browsers have add-ons that aid in downloading YouTube videos as well as converting them to .mp3.

If you use Firefox this is a good one to start with. If you are using a browser other than Firefox a quick search of their extensions page should give you plenty of examples to choose from.

I was able to load one song One Bad Apple. Very nice. I was excited. But it won’t let me add anymore on to the disc. When I tried to burn the second song it’s insisting that I insert a blank disc.

Windmill's avatar

Nevermind…it copied the second song. That was odd. Anyway, I think I have it guys!! You’re awesome!

Windmill's avatar

Crap. Got two songs loaded and it says the disc is full. Can I compress them?

OneBadApple's avatar

Not sure whether compression will help. I’m not that smart.

I was at first excited too to be able to do this. They would play fine from my iTunes Library, then in a few days iTunes could no longer locate them.

My only other suggestion is, as soon as you D/L a song from YouTube, burn it to a CD before it “goes away”. Then you should be able to insert them into your music library from there, and burn them all onto one disc if you want.

Cumbersome, I know…..but what isn’t these days ??

Windmill's avatar

It’s strange. I loaded two songs at the same time. It was fine. When I tried to load a 3rd one it said it was full. So I started over with a new CD. It downloaded all three songs just fine, then said it was full.

I guess I just need to get my whole burn list together so I can burn them all at once.

Thank you OneBadApple. You were a BIG help!

No charge to you, my friend….

@Windmill Typically, the practice is to create a playlist, then burn all of those songs to a CD at once. Depending on the type of CD you’re using, it’s usually not possible to add more songs once a session of “burn to disc” is complete. Perhaps that’s why you’re having trouble.

OneBadApple's avatar

No, my issues are not related to CD burning. I have successfully transferred songs from YouTube videos into my iTunes Library and they initially play fine there, and I assume can be burned alone at that time, or as part of any playlist. But a day or two later, iTunes “cannot locate” the song. It offers to help me “find it”, but that hasn’t worked once.

That’s why I suggested getting the song onto CD right away. You won’t care if iTunes can’t find it anymore. I can “find it”. It’s right here in my left-hand bottom desk drawer….

Windmill's avatar

That’s what’s happening to me @glacial. I burn one song and it quits for the day. I’m now considering getting a memory card. I’ve been compiling my list and I have a feeling I’d get through about 1/16th of the burn when the disc really WILL be full.

You guys have been awesome.

@OneBadApple It sounds like you’re having issues related to the way iTunes does file management. If you have hardly any music, you could just make yourself a backup file that you can copy out of when iTunes “loses” your file. But I think the issue is not that the files are being deleted, but moved to a location you aren’t aware of.

Have a look under Edit > Preferences > Advanced (the gear wheel to the right)

If “Keep iTunes media folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library” are checked, then as soon as you play a new song, it should go directly to the location shown in the box marked “iTunes media folder location”. The files are removed from wherever you put them, and sent there. If you don’t want them to be in that location, you can choose a new location for them by clicking “Change” to the right of that box.

Just beware: if you’re using an external hard drive to hold music, that hard drive must be connected to your computer when you start iTunes, or you risk having iTunes change the location to a different one of its choosing. But again – the songs would not be deleted, just moved. I find it a lot easier to find them through a navigator like Explorer (or whatever you use on your OS) than through iTunes – as you have hinted, it can be frustrating to use if you don’t know where to look for the files.

@glacial I just printed your post and will use it in trying to resolve my iTunes issues now, and in the future.

Thanks very much….

OK, bought a 16 GB flash drive. Will it do the same as the CD’s, in that I can only load my songs all at once, or can I load them one at a time as I go?

glacial's avatar

@Windmill You can add and remove songs from a flash drive at any pace you like. However, see my note above regarding iTunes file storage, if you use iTunes. The flash drive is essentially an external hard drive.

Windmill's avatar

I don’t use iTunes. I’m not even sure what it is…isn’t that a program for a smart phone?

glacial's avatar

No, it’s a program that plays and manages music on your computer. :)

You can first download videos, the simplest way is to ad ss letters after www. and before youtube.com in the url. And then use Nero or any other cd burning software to record it on CD
