Why would people choose to put black granite in a kitchen?

I hate the idea of waking up to a kitchen with black countertops. Why choose black? Is it the cheapest color?

A dark countertop when paired with light colored cabinets give a classic look.
I love a black and white kitchen.
We did granite. Our granite vendor/installer told us straight up on our first visit, that he would not do “Black”. That if we really wanted it we would be sorry. We went dark, not black. Never could get a reason from him. A “Tile” guy had the same notion also. Said we would be sorry if we went with black tile; shower/bath counter tops.
Probably a lime scale thing.
I think it’s pretty. My sister has black granite counter tops and she hates it. It shows every little smudge.
I saw a show where the person put in soapstone. I think it’s soft but it was cheaper than granite. From what I understand, granite emits radon? The black soapstone is covered with an oil/wax substance which really brings out the veins and makes it shine. She put it on a bathroom vanity.
My apartment has one and I find it very impractical. Things get lost on it. I have some black plastic utensils and black-handled knives which simply disappear. I sometimes can’t find some things right in front of me.
It is good looking, but I’d never choose it.
Everyone else is doing it, and they simply take it for granite.
As an ocd germaphobe, I couldn’t do it, but I think it does look beautiful- for other people. :)
I especially hate black toilets, ugh, how do you know they’re truly clean I ask you?!?
I love the look of black in a kitchen, but it is a bear to keep clean. My mother wanted them long ago. They didn’t last long.
We have black counter tops, blends in with the wife’s black (burnt) meals.
I think it looks nice. Very classy.
Out worktops are granite. They are gorgeous, but you have to wipe them down a lot. I wish they were cheaper than what they were. If you want cheap though, you buy white, around here anyway.
My in-laws have black granite counter tops. It looks terrific with their pale cabinets. Definitely wasn’t cheap!
Because they like it…..? Because it’s their kitchen?.....Because the world would be lame if everyone had the same kitchen?
Because people are suckers for fads and trends, all of which will look dated within about 10 years. Vessel sinks, anyone?
I still want to know how you KNOW they’re completely cleaned and sterilized. Anybody?
@KNOWITALL Sanitizer spray from the restaurant supply store.
Everyone has his/her own taste about color and texture. And thank goodness for the variety, else we’d be living in a monochrome world.
@Tropical_Willie I have black marble counters at work and I’m not ever convinced it’s 100% clean.
@KNOWITALL
The white counters can be crawling with chicken blood and E. Coli, just because it is white doesn’t make sterile.
I always thought they look stunning but now having some in my kitchen I find them so difficult to keep clean. So would never choose them personally.
To me, the gloomy factor is worse than having them sanitized. I’m not into sanitizing anyway. Ah, good morning and welcome to your black counter top. Yuk.
@Aster How about clear? That seems to be the ‘in’ thing right now. I think my ocd would like that a lot!
I saw one made of shattered beer bottles and bottlecaps, with clear resin poured over it. I want to do that sooo much.
@Seek_Kolinahr Resin over walnuts or bullets!? I hear you got some comin! lol
I’ve got em! The walnuts are delicious, and I’m considering sacrificing my wood burner and using it as a soldering tool to start making stuff out of these cartridges.
@Seek_Kolinahr That is so cool!! I hope you post pics when you get something going. I’m really interested in how the cartridges come out.
This kitchen with black granite counter tops and white cabinets is lovely.
I’m not a big fan of black and white, but that works amazingly.
Ours are pretty much black, but not solid. It’s like this “emerald pearl” pattern here.
I like it. I’ve never had a problem with it being smudgy or losing things on it. It came with the house, so we didn’t choose it, but I think I prefer dark. My husband wishes it was for like the “giallo forito” on that link, though. Meh…
I saw the Emerald Pearl that @livelaughlove21 posted and I think i could live with it. It was in a house we looked at but the green parts in the house were blue and it looked like blue sapphires.
