Why did T.S. Elliot become a Christian? Do you know the details?

Asked by Aster (20028points) November 3rd, 2013

I hope I spelled his name correctly. I can’t find in what way he found “religion.” Do you know his story? He wrote, “Mere Christianity.”

One “L”

Conversion to Anglicanism and British citizenship

On 29 June 1927, Eliot converted to Anglicanism from Unitarianism, and in November that year he took British citizenship. He became a warden of his parish church, Saint Stephen’s, Gloucester Road, London, and a life member of the Society of King Charles the Martyr.[28][29] He specifically identified as Anglo-Catholic, proclaiming himself “classicist in literature, royalist in politics, and anglo-catholic [sic] in religion”.[30][31] About thirty years later Eliot commented on his religious views that he combined “a Catholic cast of mind, a Calvinist heritage, and a Puritanical temperament”

He was raised in a Unitarian church, and his grandfather was a Unitarian minister.

TS Eliot (Nobel Prize-winning poet) did not write Mere Christianity. CS Lewis did (he was also the author of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe).

Lewis converted to Christianity in 1929.

Thanks @glacial ! So typical of me to get the wrong name! I have CS Lewis’ book and wondered about him. And also thanks to @Seek_Kolinahr .

You’re welcome, @Aster. :)

Actually, it occurs to me that you might enjoy his book Surprised by Joy or the film Shadowlands, which is based on his relationship with his wife, Joy Gresham. I’m sure some poetic licence was taken for the film version, but you might still find it interesting.
