Can you tell attraction by looking into someone's eyes?

Asked by illusionslies (586points) November 6th, 2013

What is that thing that makes time stop the moment you look into another’s eyes? What is that ‘force’, if you will? Can it be platonic or is it always mutual? That intense electricity, I think, if it happens for one person it definitely must’ve happen to the other too.

Yes, without a doubt.

Unless they have some strange reason to fake it.

AND they’re good at it.

The pupils of the eyes dilate when they spy something attractive. We recognize it on a subliminal level (unless you’re watching for it.)

I’m a watcher of pupils. It’s a very handy skill.

I used to be a teacher of pupils! They talked a lot. ;)

@SecondHandStoke @Dutchess_III Wait so how does this work? what is a pupil? what happens when it is what what what?

Involuntary dilation of the eye’s pupil.

It is a key component in detecting replicants who lack a human empathy response.

Good eye makeup.

@illusionslies The pupil is the dark center of the eye, it’s how light gets inside the eye ball, the aperture for the eye. As one gets attracted it opens without conscious action on the part of the viewer. And when one is attracted to a person whose eyes are doing that, one’s eyes respond with similar reaction.

@zenvelo @SecondHandStoke thanks. I met a girl last week who couldn’t look at me in the eyes. Does that mean her pupils were out?

One’s looking another in the eyes isn’t the same issue.

I wish I knew. There is this guy at the gym and I wish I could tell. I feel like we are flirting. He could just be wondering what is wrong with me. :oc

She is probably nervous or shy, because she likes you! I guess she is not comfortable around you yet but once you get to know each other well she will definetly look into your eyes!

Yep @illusionslies! Her pupils was broke. There’s an app for that, though.

Also, when it’s dark the pupils dilate to let more light in. When it’s bright the pupils contract. You ever see on the shows where they want to know if a person is unconscious, and they flash a light into someone’s eye? “Fixed and dilated” means the person is unconscious.

Oh man @SecondHandStoke Initially I mis read your response as “It is a key component in detecting republicans who lack a human empathy response.”

Clever.

Attraction is more influenced by smell, but this happens unconsciously.
