Seriously? I was beyond excited when Netflix added it to their lineup. I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.
So far I’ve watched 1.5 episodes and I am not liking it one bit.
For those of you who watch it, does it get better? I’m about to give up.

It does not get better. If you don’t like it now, don’t bother.
I think the concept is intriguing, and Michael C. Hall is great (especially in Six Feet Under). But the show has always suffered from some really poor writing and some embarrassing acting (Jennifer Carpenter). Despite my reservations, however, I have watched nearly all of this. I keep saying that I will stop, but I have invested too much in it. I just wish the writers would get the hell out of the way.
Jennifer Carpenter’s character is a drinking game.
1 drink for: “fuck”
2 drinks for a combo: “What the fucking fuck?”
3 drinks for creativity: “Holy Mary, mother of fuck”
I like Dexter (show)
I am utterly obsessed with Dexter (series of novels).
Novel-universe Dexter is actually an emotionless psychopath, not just a guy who likes to kill people.
@tom_g Thank you. I was hoping it would improve! Maybe I’ll just stick with Sons of Anarchy for now.
I watched 3 episodes last night. Definitely addiction worthy.
@Seek_Kolinahr Jennifer Carpenter is his sister, right?
Yep.
FWIW – Sons of Anarchy is horrible in comparison to Dexter. My husband keeps renting the seasons of SOA, even though he thinks it sucks, too. I think he’s got the same thing going on as @tom_g – so invested in it he can’t stop watching. Tell you what… I can.
“Wah, my daddy’s dead, my mom’s a stupid whore and my girlfriend is annoying! I wanna move away I have to stay home, WAH!!” Gag me.
I enjoyed the 1st few seasons but yes, it got tedious. I’m not sure I’ll order the final season, after all this was just discussed awhile back and I’m pretty sure I can live without seeing the finales. Like anything it was novel, now it;s just rather repetitious.
I, for one, do NOT like “Dexter.” Call me an old-fashioned prude but no matter how popular it may be, I’m not interested in watching a series that glorifies/justifies murder. I believe that TV and movie violence begets street violence, and that violent acts perpetrated by fictional characters like Dexter are copycatted by nutjobs like James Eagan Holmes, who perpetrated the Aurora movie theater massacre last year.
It’s a well written show. But it’s not for everybody.
Just last night my boyfriend forced me to watch it! He’d been wanting me to for a while, since we finished Breaking Bad whenever it ended and were looking for something exciting to watch. He’s seen it and likes it, I haven’t seen it but heard it ended terribly. We watched one episode last night, I didn’t really feel one way or another, then I fell asleep. I feel a strong aversion to that show, lol, can’t say why.
He, like The Zodiac, has a killing outfit.
Also, he has great long eyelashes.
Mine are blonde and kinda disappear. Brown or clear mascara fixes this somewhat.
There should be no ovethinking this show. He’s a serial killer who kills serial killers. Take the bait or don’t. I did.
One of the reasons why I kept watching. Wanna see Dexter escape discovery. How they did it was fictionally believable. To me at least. And at the same time balancing his personal life’s drama. That was all cool.
And Mazuka’s once in a while comedy injection. : )
I never watched the TV series but have loved all of the books. You might enjoy the books more than the TV show.
Has anyone noticed how the main theme of so many great cable shows is avoiding discovery?
Dexter.
The Walking Dead.
Breaking Bad….
I thought that was Raymond :)
I enjoyed about four seasons and then decided I had my fill.
I think the most interesting part of the show was that Dexter’s certainty that he was a monster and his anxiety about passing as a ‘regular person’ was what made him so human. At his core he was super conflicted about his violence and his enjoyment of it. But while he was never able to stop (while I was watching any way) the lengths he went to to try and fit in, the way he questioned his actions and tried to decypher what was and wasn’t appropriate and expected, that was as human as it gets. At it’s core Dexter was a show about a man trying desperately to be part of society that, ultimately, was not so different from himself as he thought.
Not related, but my first time seeing Michael Hall was on Dexter. Well, I just finished Six Feet Under and I was in for quite a surprise lol. Dexter plays David Fisher better than Dexter.
Michael C Hall is gorgeous. I’d watch him in anything. Or nothing. I’m not fussy.
It’s the broad shoulders, barrel chest, and the giant arms, methinks. Rrrowr.
He was such a little bitch in SFU.
Though he acted the character well his role as Dexter was a breath of fresh air.
The character of Dexter and the plots he got involved in were interesting, though I could usually do without the B-plots. If the show was 3 or 4 seasons shorter, it could have been a masterpiece. For instance, Seasons 1 and 2 were great, 3 was a major shift down in quality, but then Season 4 sort of made up for 3 in its awesomeness. 5 and 6 had their moments (some amazing visuals in 6, plus the fantastic cliffhanger). 7 and 8 were meh (though 7 was better and probably should have been the final season).
Any show that uses the term “donkeyfluffer” deserves some recognition.
I must have missed that epiode.
