Old, new, doesn’t matter. Do you have any that you particularly enjoy?
Top of my list:
Full Metal Jacket
Pearl Harbor
The Thin Red Line
The Pianist not sure if this one counts as a war movie, but it’s amazing.
I’m sure I’m going to get a verbal beat down for liking Pearl Harbor. I’m ok with that.

The Great Escape
The Dirty Dozen
Saving Private Ryan
Kelly’s Heroes
Inglorious Basterds
Full Metal Jacket
Black Hawk Down
You see, I could go on all day here…
Schindler’s List
The Piano
The Longest Day
Thanks @ucme I totally forgot Black Hawk Down!
@Katniss I think I asked this a while back, so it’s right up my street…not that I live in a war torn district, just to clear that up.
Saving Private Ryan comes to mind first. But @glacial opened up a whole new bag of worms: Old Movies (not in any order of preference).
Besides many of the others listed above:
All Quiet on the Western Front
Passage to Marseille
To Have and Have Not
How could I forget “Grand Illusion”? One of the best movies of all time in any genre,
And can we count “Casablanca”?
Catch 22
Bridge On the River Kwai
The Longest Day
Von Ryan’s Express
Why the fuck did I put Piano earlier?
Life is Beautiful was, well…beautiful.
Full Metal Jacket of course. “I AM in a world of shit”—- love love love
Good morning, Vietnam with Robin Williams.
Platoon with Charlie Sheen.
Jarhead.
Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn (does this count?)
Boo – I meant to link this clip from 49th Parallel. Oops.
@KNOWITALL I don’t think Private Benjamin ever went to war, did she? If that counts, then Stripes should, too. :P
@glacial Can’t remember tbh. I’d count Stripes, too. :)
I do not know any movie where america loses, so right now, I have no favourite war movie.
@glacial
I mean a movie where the american main land is invaded and cities are turned to rubble.
The only example I have is the Fallout series of PC-Games, but in that the entire world is reduced to ashes in the nuclear holocaust.
@ragingloli Not Pearl Harbor? It didn’t end in Hawaii, it went further up California’s cost, too.
You must have loved the WTC footage then. :(
@ragingloli You must laugh maniacally while watching Red Dawn.
The Enemy Below
Bridge on the River Kwai
Ran
Gallipoli
Zulu
Wow. No one mentioned Henry V?
I also have to confess to a certain guilty pleasure in enjoying Independence Day.
I love Full Metal Jacket. It’s a great movie, and Lee Ermey is one badass mother in this.
The Pianist is another favorite. It’s disturbing, Roman Polanski survived through the Holocaust and said he wanted to convey what it was like, in movie form, as much as he could.
Star Wars
The Last Starfighter
Enemy Mine
John Carter
Galaxy Quest
Starship Troopers
For the record I am a Browncoat.
Schindler’s List
Saving Private Ryan
@Blondesjon I forgot Starship Troopers, still cracks me up, good one.
In general, I don’t like war movies, because I’m very sensitive, and they conjure up horrible memories (of watching footage of the wars, during which I’ve been alive, on TV, starting with Vietnam) and worrying about whether my brother would be called up for Vietnam, and hearing the horror stories from my WWII Vet relatives. War movies tend to make me cry and feel anxious.
That being said, I think Atonement is a very good movie, in that it has a very unusual ending, great film making.
And of course, there’s always 1941.
Oh, and don’t forget, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (you know the classic scene with Snoopy battling it out with the Red Baron).
I guess, technically, you could classify The Sound of Music as a war movie.
In the same vein, Casablanca.
The Milagro Bean Field War
I prefer anti-war movies. Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory is a must-see.
Hamburger Hill with Dylan McDermott is my all-time favorite war flick.
Good Morning Viet Nam isn’t all that bad either!
Heartbreak Ridge
Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers
The Dirty Dozen
Full Metal Jacket
Casualties of War
Apocalypse Now
Tora Tora Tora
Band of Brothers (I know, I know. It’s a miniseries, not a movie. But it was outstanding.)
Platoon
Glory
Force 10 from Navarone
The Deer Hunter
Flags of Our Fathers
The Big Parade (Silent, 1925)
Apocalypse Now
Band of Brothers (Miniseries)
Casablanca
Passage to Marseille
To Have and Have Not
The African Queen
La Ciociara (Two Women)
—are all war films in my estimation as they address civilian nationals who are dramatically affected by war—a population far more numerous than the one on the front line.
Gods and Generals, and Gettysburg
I love Lucius Malfoy (I don’t care what his name is, he’s Lucius Malfoy) and Heath Ledger in The Patriot. In fact, apart from Gibson himself, that whole movie is well-done. His acting isn’t even bad, I’m just sick of his face.
Oh yeah, Mrs. Miniver. Way too sweet for modern tastes. Diabetics need to stay away from this one.
I’ve never seen “The Best Years of Our Lives” but it’s supposed to be one of the best classic war movies.
Mrs. Miniver reminded me of another British classic: Squadron 633
Has to be full metal jacket for my money.
I don’t like war movies much. But my favorite war movie is 300.
The Bridge Over the River Kwai
