Will anything ever be done to fix the broken search feature?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37751points) November 12th, 2013

Yes, I know no development is being done on this site.

I just searched for a simple, two-word question, and the results brought up nothing. I was surprised, remembering I’d asked it. I then went through many pages of my own questions, but I could not find it.

So, I asked the question anew. I carefully wrote the details. I clicked on “Ask Fluther,” and it opened the identical question I asked three years ago.

Will anything ever be done to fix the broken search feature here on Fluther?

I just used it, and it seems to be working fine. Try again.

As an alternative you can tell Google to limit it’s search by specifying “site:”, like this:

“dogs site:Fluther.com”

I have trouble with searching also. It’s very frustrating. I have turned up with no answers a few times. I also come up with all sorts of junk answers for the search.

I wish we could narrow the search more if we wanted to. Like searching just my Q’s for instance.

For me, the search engine as a whole seems weak. I think Google will give you better results.

The search function doesn’t work for me, either. All I get is “You searched for ________. Nice.” It can still be used to find member profiles, but not specific posts. The Google search option doesn’t work either, however, since Social and Meta have both been delisted. Unless you’re trying to find something you posted in General, you’re out of luck.

I have no idea what has gone wrong, but it seems to me that fixing it doesn’t really count as development so much as basic site maintenance (which, as I understand it, Ben and Andrew are still committed to doing). Hopefully, it will be fixed soon. But I wonder if it has even been brought to their attention yet?

Great tip @jaytkay. Just tried it and works great.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room But like I mentioned, only for questions in General.

If I remember correctly the search originally was one they did themselves and it was pretty worthless. Then it switched to the Google one. Then they hired camertron and he switched to a internal search that worked really well. Then it went back to using Google.

My hunch is for some reason the one camertron did broke and unsure of how it really worked (and not wanting to spend the time to figure it out) they decided to just go back to the google one.

Ben is aware of the problem, but is very busy with other things at the moment. I don’t know when (or if) it will be fixed. Sorry guys!
