Why isn't Fluther Chat used?

Asked by dafox (182points) November 19th, 2013

I am curious as to why no one seems to use the Fluther chat room.

Because it’s crap!

I’ve tried but it is so fast paced your comment just gets lost in the sea of babble.
If you can actually hold a 3 line dialogue for more than 15 seconds that is a miracle. lol

Fast paced? I stopped going because too few people means too slow a feed.

Coloma's avatar

@syz Well..the few times I went there it was at warp speed. By the time I posted something it was lost 10 comments down already.

I don’t find chat a useful way to interact for the reasons Coloma states.

Easier to pm and more private.

I don’t know what you mean, it has more regular uses than Google+ does, and that is without forcing it on anyone.

That’s a good question @dafox. One I’ve wondered about, myself. When I first came back to Fluther, I checked and there was no one there. I checked it just now after I saw your question, and, once again, no one there.

I believe I even opened a room and left it open for a while to see what happened. Big surprise – nothing.

@ibstubro and @dafox It used to be more active at one time but the “regular users” of it are gone.

Any time I’ve visited there was just tumbleweed blowing in the wind.

@ibstubro The only time I’ve seen it become lively is when a few people are discussing something, and decide to take it to chat, so that it can move faster, and people who aren’t interested don’t have to keep reading. So – if you find yourself in such a situation, saying “Hey, do you want to go to chat?” might be a good idea, and could spark a lively conversation if others are as keen.

I don’t really know why people don’t like chat on Fluther. The only thing that I find uncomfortable about it is having one’s presence announced. It’s that odd feeling of walking up to a group of people who are already talking, and having all eyes turn to the newcomer.

But I think one of the reasons that there is resistance to it is that a lot of aspects of Fluther are already chat-like. We can see how many members are on a thread. We can see who’s writing. If you type quickly, it’s no slower than chat. So, why go to a separate place for that?

Great answer, @glacial! Well reasoned and well spoken from an old timer heritage member.

I love chat. I’m not there because no one else ever is. And there’s no way to know whether anyone else is actively online, anyway. Sometimes I’ll log in to the chatroom and keep it open just to see if someone else shows up. They rarely do.

I’m there now. 10:42 PM EST

Because it’s like being in a room full of a hundred people talking all at the same time. It’s too fast and furious and not fun at all. I like the format and the pace of the regular Fluther. You still get to hear what people are saying instantly, but it’s not being spat at you. I also like the fact that each Fluther Q is a separate issue, rather than a free for all. If I wanted a free for all, I’d go shopping on Black Friday.

3–4 years ago, chat was very much alive. We had a core group of users who were there around the clock and we all became very close. I don’t even want to know how many hours some of us were in there, but there were days where we’d talk about the sunrises we were seeing—because we realized we had stayed up all night chatting again. There were hidden chat rooms, too. Those were fun.

That core group moved on a long time ago, and I’m actually a little sad to see that the chat room appears to be dead. It’s a very fond internet memory for me.

I’ve been to Fluther Chat once and to tell the truth, I couldn’t join in the conversation because I didn’t understand what people were talking about
