Do you think this Joe Boxer commercial (showing guys in their boxers making holiday music) is offensive or appropriate for a televised store ad?

Asked by jca (36062points) November 19th, 2013

One of my fellow Jellies linked this ad on FB yesterday. I watched it with my daughter and we thought it was cute.

Today I read on Huff Post that many are saying this commercial is offensive and should be yanked from TV.

The link shows guys in their boxer shorts shaking their hips to the sound of bells chiming Christmas music. In other words, it’s like the guys “bells” are making the music. A young child like my daughter does not understand that part, she just sees guys in shorts shaking their hips. The commercial is for Joe Boxer, which is sold by Kmart, which is owned by Sears.

The comments below the article are mixed.

Here’s the link:

What do you think?

Not offensive at all, but then some folks are offended by their own fucking shadow.
Ring your bell end for xmas!

That’s funny! Man, you can play around with woman parts till the cows come home, but the slightest suggestion of man parts and people get up in arms.

Like, we wound up on an awful movie the other night. It showed everything on the woman. Full frontal shots, everything. But not one penis did we see.

Please. Here’s how it works…

“the commercial is for Joe Boxer, which is sold by Kmart, which is owned by Sears.”

Both Kmart and Sears are in horrible financial shape. What better way to prompt some attention (c’mon, did you even know that Kmart and Sears still existed?) than to troll the puritanical US with something harmless and preemptively announce a “controversy”?

Some people even find Yogi Bear offensive…no, it’s true.

I am not sure how that can be construed as offensive, as it is not sexual whatsoever. No bulge is shown, and the men are adequately covered up top.

The commercial is funny. Not quite as funny as this one.

It’s too bad that Kmart is a terribly outdated store. Customer service is non existent and they are always a mess.

I think it’s pretty damn funny. I don’t know if I would have even thought of what “balls” were jingling. Honestly, I would have probably just thought they were grooving.

@anniereborn The main guy in the silk shorts? You can see his “bells” swinging from side to side!

Offensive to whom?!

Jeez, people are so easily offended. Lighten up, people!

Yes, but only in the way that I find any inane, lame ad offensive. Like that one with the whole family dressed alike, and the woman says something about them all being so different, and then the commercial goes on in silence for about ten freaking seconds like you, the viewer, are too stupid to notice unless they give you plenty of time… no idea what the ad is for, at this point I change the channel as soon as i see it.

Some ads are super annoying. There is one for some old age related heart thing. Dude and his wife are sitting at the kitchen table and he’s carrying on some monologue about his heart condition and this new magic medicine his doctor prescribed. He isn’t talking to his wife (because it would have been REALLY stupid, like she needed all that info when she’s been at his side from the beginning) and he isn’t talking to the camera. He’s looking at some unknown, invisible being just off camera. It’s like “Who the hell are you talking to??” I don’t even know what drug the commercial is touting.

If I had kids, I may not appreciate the humor, but I don’t so I think it’s funny.

Little old ladies and proper types don’t seem to think parts of the anatomy are worthy of their time ya know, I get that.

I think its funny and not offensive at all. We’ve had far more risque ads than that one over this side of the pond and we’re called uptight.

I had to look at it several times to see if it offended me. It didn’t!

Is it just me, or can you see the clapper on the guy in gold?

I think it’s mildly disturbing but cute. Mostly I agree with @tom_g that it’s intentionally controversial.

ibstubro's avatar

It’s RACIST. Organ profiling! The Black guy has the only dong you can see ding!

DON’T LOOK, Ethel!!

TVs have an OFF button.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I can’t help but wonder if the guy in gold’s clappers are real or if they’ve been enhanced?!

ibstubro's avatar

I’m not gonna touch that one with a 10 inch pole, @Dutchess_III!

Dutchess_III's avatar

All that money and that’s all the ehnancement on your pole you got?? 10 inches??

HAHAHA!

Jingle balls.

I think it’s hilarious.

Balls dangle and hang low, they might as well jingle for the holiday too people are just upset because Joe Boxer has the balls to pull something like this off and most of all during the holiday season.

Dingle dangle Joe. Jingle all the freakin way.

I thought it was cute. You don’t actually see any junk, if you could see anything I’d probably have a different opinion.

LOL, I thought it was funny. Not offensive at all.
