When is the last time you sent someone a personal letter or card through the postal service?

Asked by jca (36062points) November 20th, 2013

I see today there’s an NPR article that says the postal service says that the average American send a personal letter through the mail only about once every two months.

I send note cards to people, to say get well or to some few people who I don’t email, about one or two every two months, so I guess I am an average user.

What about you?

It is very rare for me. Like maybe once or twice a year. The last time I sent a card was to my brother’s family when he passed away. This was about 5 weeks ago.

There was a time when I was heavily involved in a cabal devoted to seeking out and mailing bizarre post cards to one another, but those days are gone. Now it’s birthday, sympathy, Christmas cards, RSVPs to wedding invitations and thank you cards. This is a great question, because it brings me to the realization of how easy it is to have your life stolen from you by a frivolous social agenda.

I just send anniversary cards, birthday cards and Christmas cards to my parents and best friend every year. So I guess even I am an average user. I too feel, letter writing has died at the cool hand of technology. I definitely miss handwritten letters with my name on it, clearly written, not typed or text. Those letters proved we knew how to be grammatically correct and spell words correctly. It was something much more intimate about it and the thought that someone actually took the time to sit down and write something to you and then go out, buy postage, and mail it.

We just mailed two letters yesterday but that is an anomaly. Typically we are pretty much average and mail something every couple of months.

I also send about 40 or so Christmas/holiday cards each year.

Apart from my rent check, it would have been after my kid’s birthday, when he mailed homemade thank you cards to his grandparents.

Christmas last year for me. My daughter sends occasionally to a boy she left behind when we moved. He is still deeply loyal to her. Awwwwwww.

Yesterday I sent a 60th birthday card to a friend, and two weeks ago I mailed a typed letter to another friend who’s off the grid. I’d prefer sending and receiving paper birthday cards, but when I mail one I always schedule a e-card backup for backup… in case snow, rain, heat or gloom of night or my lousy handwriting on the envelope stays my courier from the swift completion of his appointed round.

I send Christmas cards, because I appreciate having them on my own mantle (so I assume others feel the same), and I send cards when I can’t attend an event that I would otherwise have gone to (wedding, funeral, etc.).

I don’t send paper letters anymore, and while I buy cards to go with birthday gifts given in person, I never send a birthday card in the mail anymore, either.

I just sent out a birthday card, and an anniversary card last week.
I use email for letters, but if I want to send a hard copy of a picture or something, I will send a note with it.

I wrote and mailed a very short thank you card last week; but I’m sorry to report that is a highly unusual activity for me. I typically resort to e-mail or e-cards to express gratitude. I love getting handwritten cards and notes, so I need be more thoughtful in sending those to others.

In August, for my dad’s birthday. Aside from Christmas cards, I send about half a dozen cards a year, mainly to my parents and in-laws.

That’s how my grandmother and I communicate. We use the phone of course, but we’re always sending each other letters regularly. She had the internet for a while, but she rarely used it for anything at all, so she thought it better to cut that. So we’re back to letters. But it’s cool that way. :)
