Smokers ONLY, lavish indulgence or joyless addiction?

Asked by SecondHandStoke (9522points) November 21st, 2013

This question is aimed at smokers of all forms of tobacco.

Opinions from non and anti-smokers will inevitably contaminate this discussion. I’m already aware that you have a self affirming take on the subject. Don’t be a cliche’.

I don’t usually post questions in the General section. I have this time. Here’s your opportunity to uphold Fluther’s justifiable rules.

Lavish indulgence for me. I quit all the time, then eventually get stressed and start again.

I drink very rarely and don’t indulge in any other crutches, except some chocolate on occasion.

Lavish indulgence. Sometimes I want to quit lol but when I try, I’m evil.
The last time I seriously tried, my now ex-husband went out and bought me a pack and said “Here, devil woman, smoke!”

I recently started smoking American Spirits. Lavish indulgence, especially with coffee or a drink. I have been under a ton of stress this last year so my hedonistic side has been getting the better of me again lately. Oh well…I don;t want to live to be 100 anyway, and besides, I can;t afford to. lol

lavishly stupid addiction.

For me, I just enjoy the act of smoking. If I could I’d just smoke marijuana all day, it’d be a lot healthier but then again I’d be fucktarded all day long and accomplish nothing with my life so I smoke cigarettes :P

It started as lavish indulgence, but became stupid addiction.

For me a quality cigar is a lavish indulgence which I wish I could afford on a daily basis .

As an ex smoker (and now a happy vaper of e-cigs), for me it was a bit of both. I would still be comfortable with the lavish indulgence side; I wouldn’t turn down a quality cigar or a premium menthol cigarette (the kind that costs nearly £10 a pack) but I no longer have the need to smoke them regularly. Like @uberbatman I enjoy the act of smoking more than I enjoy the nicotine, so low-nic or zero-nic e-cigs work just as well for me as the “analog” ones.

Lavish indulgence that’s possibly a stupid addiction. I’m not sure yet.

I quit more than a decade ago but I loved the habit. I looked forward to having one, especially in the morning. I enjoy physical things like bicycling, running and not getting cancer so they had to go.

Lavish indulgence. Camel cigarettes are my preferred brand. Nothing beats having my morning coffee with a Camel.

Katniss's avatar

@flip86 Does Camel still make the cigarettes with the menthol option? I smoked those for a while, then I went back to Marlboro.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know of a cigarette brand as good as Marlboro that costs less?

flip86's avatar

@Katniss Yes, Camel still sells menthol cigs. Any smoke shop should sell them.

L&M cigarettes are similar to Marlboro and are a little cheaper. They are made by the same company.

Oh ya, I forgot to add, like @downtide I tried going e-cig route. Turns out I’m allergic. Fail.

A joyless addiction. I hate everything about it. The fact that I have to smoke outside (well, in the kitchen to avoid it contaminating the home), the stink, the cost, the things it does to my teeth, my body and my asthma. I started smoking to look cool and be social ha ha!

It’s so not cool now and so not social. I have a personal theory that smokers were abused in some way as kids. Plus have no self worth. How could we?

No.

Coloma's avatar

@LornaLove Nothing more than nicotine neuropathways. Has nothing to do with self worth and everything to do with nicotine addiction. I really like who I am but a habit is a habit.

I smoke a cigarette maybe once every week or two. After coffee or a drink, and when it’s cold out, there’s something especially bracing about it. I can’t smoke unless all those conditions are met. For some reason, smoking during hot weather is like drinking heavy red wine in hot weather- just not refreshing. But on a brisk day, it’s like huddling around my own tiny campfire.

Nimis's avatar

@uberbatman What exactly is in it that you’re allergic to? And what kind of reaction did you have?

@Haleth Yup. Quit five years ago. Never craved a cigarette during warm weather. But the cold weather…good thing I live in California.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Nimis E-cigs have two main compounds in them that are vaporized. Vegetable Glycerol and Polypropylene Glycerol. I’m allergic to the latter. After a couple drags off an ecig and my throat will get a little itchy and I’ll feel a tightness in my chest like I smoked a pack and a half in the span of a couple hours.

Lavish indulgence and a rotten (but not joyless) addiction. I really enjoy smoking, but wish I didn’t need it. It costs a lot of money and certainly isn’t doing me any favors in the health department. If I were able to be a ‘social smoker’ and only smoke occasionally, I’d love it.

downtide's avatar

@uberbatman if you are allergic to propylene glycol (thats the ingredient that causes the most allergies with e-cigs), you can try a liquid that’s 100% vegetable glycerine. It won’t give the same throat hit as a PG-based liquid but its a much smoother draw and produces plenty of smoke. Most liquids contain both PG and VG, but reputable retailers will also offer VG-only options as well. If you’re tempted to try making your own liquids at home, you need to add about 10% vodka or de-ionised water to the VG otherwise its too viscous.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@downtide I’ve tried just using VG. It sucks. Yea there is vapor but you can’t feel anything at all so it kinda kills the whole reason I’m “smoking” in the first place.

I have been tobacco free for over 30 years, but I don’t judge.

At first, it was a lavish indulgence, made me feel “all grown up”. But later I felt I was chained to the plant, and it evolved into a (not altogether) joyless addiction.

IamBii's avatar

Joy*ful* addiction. Lavish indulgence. Best friend. Damned nuisance. It’s everything to me. I often wish I would want to quit. Like really, really want to. As in really want to want to quit! But I don’t think I’d even recognise the feeling. And I don’t even think I can say why sometimes I want to to want to want to quit…...
smoke that, friends
