Does it depend on where you live?
Hospitals?
Urgent Care?
Police?
Fire departments?
I think all government offices are closed, like banks and post offices.

Well, your first four for sure. I’m pretty sure they never close.
Around here, you’ll also find some gas stations, pharmacies, convenience, and grocery stores open. Many on a Sunday schedule (12PM to 6PM).
I live quit close to a US interstate highway (I-85, for those keeping score). Even on Thanksgiving, when everything else is closed, the following will be open.
= Waffle House (they never ever close)
= Gas stations at the interchange (there are three within ¼ mile)
= McDonalds at the interchange (not the one about 2 miles down)
Kroger is usually open until mid-afternoon on Thanksgiving, Publix is closed,
Urgent care, maybe.
Some grocery stores, most restaurants, and all of the gas stations will be open.
We’re open (veterinary emergency hospital).
Assuming we are talking about America.
I think urgent care is a toss up. In fact I would bet most aren’t open.
Police and fire and hospitals are all open.
Hotels, Disney World, most movie theatres, gas stations and many Chinese restaurants—open. Many restaurants are open Thanksgiving with special menus that include turkey, but most are closed on Christmas unless it is in a very tourist driven area. Tourist areas have much much more open than your average town. But, the Chinese restaurants are a tradition for being open on Christmas day, but still no guarantee.
It used to be all retail was closed Thanksgiving and Christmas, with the exception of some 24 hour stores and some food stores sometimes were open Thanksgiving morning. Now, some retailers will be open Thanksgiving. Christmas day seems to still be sacred though. You can shop Christmas Eve day though. Most mall stores are open until 6:00 pm Christmas Eve.
Out of curiosity, I just checked several Urgent Care centers, all connected with the three hospitals available to us within a reasonable distance. All three were open every day, two with shorter hours on Sundays.
Just got more curious. “In fact, 85% of urgent care centers are open 7 days a week. Common hours of operation are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm daily. In fact, 81.1% of urgent care centers are open by 8:00 am and 90.6% are open until at least 7:00 pm. Of course, hours vary by location and patients should check with their local clinic for specific details.” Source
I just used the one nearest me recently for the first time. Discovering it was a gift when i was in crisis. Nice to know more details.
@gailcalled That’s good. I hope it is like that in many places. I know some of the urgent care in the Memphis metro area are closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m not sure about where I live now.
@JLeslie: That’s why it makes sense to call and get accurate info, if you are not sure.
“Urgent Medical Care PLLC is open 9am -9pm 365 days a year including all major holidays.”
This from the webpage of the UC in the Catskill region near Albany. It is very reassuring.
@gailcalled Who said not to call? Of course call first. The hours are usually listed on the website also, and most people probably would get the number from the website to begin with nowadays, but I would call no matter what. When in an urgent condition I am not going to drive for medical help just to find out the place isn’t open.
@gailcalled Are you questioning my statement that some urgent care will be closed?
^^ I think urgent care is a toss up. In fact I would bet most aren’t open.
Responding to that triggered my research.
I have no problem with you researching, it looks like most are maybe open around the country, as I said, I think that is great. For whatever reason you mentioned calling, and getting accurate information, and of course I agree with that. I didn’t say all are closed, I said it is a toss up. Toss up doesn’t mean stay home sick if you need help because JLeslie said some locations will probably be closed. How much power do you think I have with my prose? Actually, why are you misinterpreting what I wrote? I never said all are closed don’t try. You usually are so good at looking at words very literally.
Here are two urgent care chains in the Memphis area that all or some locations are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The majority of the Memphis locations are closed just looking at those two chains. There are other chains in Memphis though. Maybe the south is less likely to be open? I have no idea.
The movie theater around here will be open. It’s open 365 days a year.
It sucks for the employees, but it’s nice for people without anywhere to go for the holidays.
@Katniss Many employees beg for the holiday hours. They often get double pay, and part-timers need every work hour they can get.
My grandson works at a pharmacy part-time and he was complaining because management showed favoritism in scheduling the holiday hours.
Liquor stores are mostly open.
Chinese restaurants are usually open on Christmas. Often, other ethnic restaurants, such as Thai and Indian, are also open.
On Thanksgiving, most of the chain department and “big box” stores in my area will do business starting sometime during the afternoon or evening.
My health club will be available only during the morning of Thanksgiving. It’ll be closed for Christmas.
The gas station on our corner will be partially open. You can get gas if you can pay at the pump with your credit or debit card. The store will be closed. Same for Christmas. I like the convenience even though I’m unlikely to need it.
I scoop poop on those days. I’m always open!
