How do I get an Asperger's diagnosis without health insurance?

Asked by mjm8401 (173points) November 22nd, 2013

I am pretty sure I have Asperger’s syndrome. When I was in the second grade I was pulled out of regular classes and put into special ed. I stayed in special ed till I graduated high school, but always felt like I didn’t’t belong there. Now I am 27 and cannot hold down a regular job working with the general public. I get anxious doing a lot of tasks unless they let me do something quietly by myself or in a small group of people that I can relate to. Most of the time I get placed into situations that I simply cannot handle and (shutdown). I don’t feel anxious all the time, only during certain situations, like running a cash register or drive thru window. Crowds and loud noises make me shut down. I simply cannot hear myself think and will start to speak in monotone. So I did a lot of research and sounds like I am an aspie. I do not have health insurance but would like to go to a doctor for a diagnosis. Hopefully it will be a quick diagnosis and they won’t say I need to go to therapy or on medication. I really do not like taking pills. I would rather just have the doctor recommend a job for me that I would excel at. So my real question is how do I get into a doctors office without insurance? Do I need to apply for Medicaid? The healthcare.gov site still does not work right…

in January you will be able to get affordable health insurance regardless of your medical history, What state re you in? What is your income? You can start signing up now. I know the website has had some clichés but you can go directly to an insurance broker in your area at no additional charge to you. If you’re 27 and have no income you should have no problem getting help, unless you are in a state with a Republican governor who has refused medicare expansion. If that it site case you might have a harder time.

Try an advocacy group, like AspenNJ.org who might have knowledge of local resources.

What county are you in?

If you were classified through High School, you may also be eligible for job training and placement assistance through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation

Go to the Social Security office and apply for disability. It takes around a hour and is really simple. They will have to send you to doctor/psychiatrist for analysis. This could take a few months but if you would have done it in August you would have seen a doctor by now.

You probably won’t get disability but you will at least get a visit with the doctor who can hopefully help in some way.

It’s rather hard to get disability for AS unless it’s really bad. I mean, “cannot even function is society” bad. I can’t do customer service, and have a little bit of a hard time communicating in general, but I can hold a non-retail job with ease, so there is no cahnce in Hell of me getting disability for my AS.

It’s not a quick diagnosis either, as it’s hard to tell from many other disorders. It took them >30 years to figure mine out.

If you are interested in a job though, the manufacturing sector really is where it’s at. I am a CNC machinist, and like other manufacturing jobs I’ve had in the past, I spend at least 85% of my workday alone, just doing my damn job.

I second @jerv – it is not a quick diagnosis and very hard to get disability.

There might be non-profit human service agencies in your area that can help you find a provider who would do testing for free or on a sliding scale. See if you can look into local resources. Maybe you can even call 311 for some local resource guidance.

@mjm8401 – We might be able to help you even more if you respond to our comments, and perhaps give us some more information. I am in NJ and asked what county you’re in because I might be able to find resources in your local area.
