Does anyone actually enjoy See's candy more than regular candy bars and chocolate bars?

Asked by Kraigmo (9421points) November 28th, 2013

I notice that this time of year, some See’s candy stores get really crowded. I see the lines inside them as I go to other stores.

But isn’t See’s Candy actually not that great? That’s why people only buy it to give away… no one buys that stuff for themselves, do they?

It’s all dark chocolate poured over exotic nuts and sour jelly. Is that actually pleasing to anyone?

Isn’t Nestle Crunch a whole lot better? Is there people that actually enjoy See’s more than Nestle Crunch? Is it possible that the only reason See’s Candy makes money is that people always assume others like it?

See’s chocolates are ok, but I like others better. In Memphis the local confectioner Dinstuhl’s was out of this world. One of the things I miss about living there.

From what I have observed, See’s sets up big time for the Christmas season, I think they actually are only set up that time of year in some malls. I might be wrong, but that is when I notice them. Kiosks and corner little stores; it seems like a good business plan if that is what they do.

Back in the day, one of the original chocolates in a box for gifting was The Whitman’s sampler. You can still get them in drugstores. They sold tons and tons of those samplers, they marketed very well, it became a tradition for many people. In my opinion the chocolates were terrible. I am not satpying See’s is like Whitman’s though, See’s is miles away better than Whitman’s.

I buy chocolate money every year for Chanukah, and half the time it is crappy chocolate. I still buy it.

Moral of the story, it doesn’t always have to be good for people to buy it. Some people haven’t tried better chocolates, and some people buy things because the advertising and marketing was really good, and some buy out of tradition.

@Dutchess_III See’s main claim to fame is Warren Buffet bought the company a while back.

I love Nestle’s, but See’s is the bomb!
Get a bordeaux or a California Brittle or a brown sugar and you will swear off everything else.

They’re pretty expensive, too, But I’ve only based that off of the airport kiosks so maybe that’s why

See’s is expensive (around $15 a pound), but it is worth it!

I remember eating some sort of truffle things and as much as I really can’t stand chocolate, it was so much fun to bite into the little square not knowing what I’ll get. Hopefully it would be a caramel one or a white chocolate one or a nut one, but pray it wasn’t one of those nasty orange jelly ones.

See candy has been something I have grown up. There was a time when it used to be the ultimate treat for me! I’m a HUGE fan of the Bordeaux and scotch mallows.

See’s candies are way better than regular candy bars bought at the grocery store. It is a wee bit expensive (but worth it) and the stores are spread far and wide, so it’s not a convenience candy, it’s an indulgence candy. I’ve never met anyone who did not like See’s candy. I love going into the stores too, because it feels like you’ve stepped into a lovely shop in the year 1900. The folks that work there are always nice, too.

I actually went there last month (no holiday involved) because I was jonesing for some of their bridge mix. My brother is a Bordeaux addict.

Somebody sent my mom some recently and I can assure you it was very good, and better than Hershey’s or Whitman’s.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, I’ve never had it, so who’s going to send me some??

Never heard of it.

Yummy!

The Store closest to our house still looks like this. Most of the interiors are purposely retro in design, similar to this picture.

I remember going over to the See’s on La Cienega Blvd in Los Angeles when I was real young, loved the smell.

A was working downtown one day and heard some loud brakes and massive amounts of screaming and people running around. Then I saw the most horrible thing I have ever seen. A ball of metal and flesh in a puddle of blood. A guy driving a See’s candy truck ran a light and hit a guy in a wheelchair. He came to a full stop, then freaked out and took off driving the whole truck over the guy.

Happy Holidays.

See’s is a West Coast phenomenon as far as I know.

See’s Candies are just OK and very expensive.

For me nothing beats plain Hershey’s milk chocolate. It sends me to a warm and fuzzy place.

@gondwanalon One of my saddest days was when I realized that Hershey Canada had changed the formula for their chocolate bars. Simply infuriating. Now, when I visit the US, I pick up half a dozen bars to bring back, which I ration over a long period.

Sees makes caramels that I like more than Brachs.

See’s?
Is that Ghirardelli?

janbb's avatar

@ibstubro no – it is a separate brand.

I hate See’s candy and am always disappointed when I get a box as a gift. An expensive box of yuck. I’d rather have 2 dollars cash, than a 9 dollar box of See’s. I think the best chocolate out there is Nestle Crunch. I do think its cool they never update the look of the stores. White’s such a boring color though. But I do like the retro-1890’s look despite that.

I just don’t understand how they survive from January to October.
