What's a good weight for me?

Asked by Zeta41 (5points) December 1st, 2013 from iPhone

I’m a 5’3” 15 year old female. I currently weigh 141.5 pounds, I was 162 pounds a few months ago. I checked a BMI scale, and it said that I should be 120–125 pounds for my height and age. My bust is rather large for my age, so I don’t know if that gives or takes away from my weight, and since i’ve started exercising daily, i’ve gained alot of muscle in my arms and especially my legs. My deltoids, triceps, quads and calves are quite developed. Now, I can’t seem to lose anymore weight, i’m stuck in the 40’s. I still exercise daily, but i seem to only gain…muscle? I don’t think i’ll make it to 120 or even the 30’s… Is that bad? Am i doing something wrong?

BMI is very deceptive and only applies to people who do not have much muscular development. Because muscle weighs considerably more than fat, a person who is very muscular will be heavier than someone of the same size who isn’t. It’s not bad; on the contrary it’s very good, and you’re not doing anything wrong. You’re probably at your ideal weight now, which is why you can’t lose any more. You probably won’t be able to lose more without dieting to a very unhealthy degree; I think your goal now should be to maintain your current weight and current state of fitness.

I once weighed 50, but now I am up to over 70.
I really need to eat less to get back to 50.

Look for a waist to hip ratio calculator online and take your measurements. They are far more accurate than BMI calculators and can tell you your fat percentage.

If you’re trying to trim down, do more cardio than weight training. 141 pounds is a good weight, but it all really depends on what your body is starting to look and feel like. If you feel comfortable at that weight, don’t push yourself too hard.

The right weight for you is the one that you are when you eat healthy food, in reasonable portions and you are physically active to the level that you are able, including aerobic activity and strength training. BMI was not meant to be, and is not, an indicator of health.

Try not to focus on how much you weigh. Just be healthy.

It really depends on you body type. You could probably get away with being 130 and look fine. Waist circumference is most important because a larger waist can lead in the future to heart problems. I would think that for your age you don’t need to worry to much. Just eat right and continue to exercise. Your waist should never be more than half your height. So at 63 inches you shouldn’t be more than 31 inches. Would probably still be a little big for your height but a good waist size would probably be about 28. My waist was a 27 when I was looked my best and I was only 5 feet but I weighed back then about 122. According to charts I should’ve weighed 5 to 12 lbs less and had a waist that was 25. But I never looked right thinner. That is why I suggest people weight what feels right and looks right for their shape. I was mostly muscle at the time and when I got thinner I only lost muscle. Aim for healthy.
