(serious question) How do I do a psych assesment on myself?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) December 7th, 2013

I would like to have a free test, like the 500 multiple choice test on mental health that you take when admitted to a psych ward in a hospital. I don’t have confidence in my local doctors and I believe that they are keeping secrets from me. I thought that If I did it on myself then I would know for sure.

Not sure if this is serious or not, but I think trying to do a psych evaluation on yourself might be a bad idea.

A mental health assessment is usually done by your primary care doctor or by a psychiatrist, psychologist, or social worker. It’s best to talk to your doctor about any concerns you have regarding the need for the test. Usually online mental health assessment does not replace the advice of a doctor.

Serious answer, You can’t do a self assessment !

It like doing a self removal of your appendix.

Just to put things in perspective, I was diagnosed as “retarded”, and when that turned out to be false, “mentally ill” my entire childhood. As an adult the mentally ill label hung around for decades. Now I KNOW I am not mentally ill and for certain not retarded, because trustworthy people confirmed to me what I already knew. Seriously, that crap can ruin your life.

I’m over it now.

@talljasperman You need to find some people you can trust. Really.

Why not just do it? Exactly what is going to happen if you do….Do you instantly become crazy if the results say you are? Come on now be reasonable.

If anything it may be enlightening and insightful giving you a very honest look at yourself if you are truthful with your answers.

I’d even suggest going over the sheet with your doctor and have it explained more in depth.

I hope this helps you.

You won’t have access to any thorough assessment and the online ones are pretty lame to be honest. It is really easy to just answer (subconsciously) in a way that doesn’t reflect your true state but how you wish you were. When I was diagnosed with Asperger’s a large part of the process was an interview – a more natural way of eliciting responses and you can’t do that on yourself.

I’m not quite sure what info it is that you think your Drs. are hiding from you, but are you aware that you have the legal right to request a full copy of your medical records from any facility or professional who has treated you?

Then you can read everything for yourself. When you make your requests, you should specify that you wish for all case notations to be included and obviously you need to give them adequate time to prepare the copies for you.

But every patient has a right to view all of their medical records for any reason.

(Obviously tho, it might be best to omit the fact that you suspect they’re hiding something from you when making your request. That’s just common sense.
