I think Fluther has better writing standards and puts up with a lot less of the pithy crap and SPAM that Askville seems to have been accustomed to. Incidentally, that’s probably why Askville was recently shut down.

I came here from Askville ages ago, so I may be remembering a different Askville than the one you know. The design of the reward system on Askville created a lot of competitive friction. One of the answers to each Q was chosen as “Best Answer’ and given bonus points, so users tried to get that distinction. That may have had the advantage of urging answers to be complete and well-crafted, but there was also the feeling that it was you vs. the other answerers and, to make things worse, it was the answerers who (along with the asker) rated the quality of each others’ contributions. That led to all kinds of ill-feelings about the fairness of the ratings. It got pretty nasty at times.

Here we have the “lurve” system, and even that can create some resentments, but overall there’s more a sense that rather than being in competition for some prize, we’re each contributing toward a comprehensive and complex exploration of the topic. It’s kind of a “it takes a village” approach. That’s where the whole “collective” idea comes from. We all build an answer together, one that looks at many angles.

You can’t have a bunch of humans working (or playing) together without conflicts, but I just felt that there were structural features of Askville that unnecessarily fed into our worst human proclivities.

Never heard of askville, let alone judge the place, so it’s no contest for me then.

I think someone asked something similar before… I’ll give the same answer I did then.

Whatever works. How can this even be in question when the other one isn’t up and running? (Yes, I was an Askvillian that came here when it closed.)

Pointless question, there is no long any such thing as Askville.

It appears that its been quite a while since you visited Askville since you’re unaware of the closing. So I guess you sort of answered part of your own question :)

Ask Askville. Oh wait—it’s closed.

Pachyderm, I have asked askville , that is why I am now asking Fluther! TO DO THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS.

Fluther, hands down. I came here from Askville quite a long time ago. My reasons for leaving there and staying here are summed up quite succinctly by @thorninmud‘s answer above.

The other thing that I like here is the moderation. The moderators stay on top of threads, watch for spam and generally remind us to keep to the expected standards. Askville had little to no moderation and spam was rampant. It started out fun and interesting but became its own little hell on earth. I only know two people who miss it and they are both pot-stirrers.

@khajuria; I know nothing about Askville other than what I read here, but at Fluther you can (and should) make your point without shouting.

What does “pithy crap” mean?

Definitely Fluther. You get to answer more sensible questions here. Askville had very few members to give answers and just four or five responses to a question.
