Do astronauts need to move their bowels before going up into space?

Asked by talljasperman (21919points) December 11th, 2013

The official statement is that they have a plumbing problem, on the space station. Who plugged the toilet? What were they eating on the planet?

I recommend reading Chris Hadfield’s book: An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, in which he discusses all these technicalities of life off planet.

Even if they move their bowels before being launched, they still digest food during the 6 months at the space station, and they still continue to deficate. Clearing their bowels before launch has a salutary effect only temporarily.
