Don’t underestimate the importance of this guy and his invention. The world would be a far different place without him.

Hugo Schmeisser was the head of the design team for Haenel when they designed the worlds first assault rifle in Germany. He was also a Russian POW and after WWII worked on the design team for the AK-47.for the purpose of propaganda the Russians gave credit for the new assault rifle design to a tank driver named Kalashnikov.

“I wish I’d made a lawn mower.”

Mikhail Kalashnikov

That is actually a real quote.

Poor Mikhail Timofeyevich. In a just world with patents, he should have died a billionaire. It has always fascinated me that Soviet uniforms are so ugly, ill fitting and completely bereft of anything approaching style. I saw a picture of Kalashnikov this morning wearing what might as well have been a blue cardboard refrigerator carton. Eastern block countries have absolutely hideous uniforms, and the Chinese and North Koreans have inherited their former mentor’s penchant for garish tastelessness, right down to smacking large grotesque medals and ornaments on every available inch of fabric. Oh well—-
