Which of these quotes rings more true to you? Why?

Here are the quotes :

You teach people how to treat you.

How people treat you is not a reflection of you, it is a reflection of them.

Which do think is more true? Why?

I think both are true. When dealing with people casually in passing, how they treat others is a reflection on them; but as a relationship is built with repeated interactions, we can teach others what treatments we will or will not tolerate from them. I used to be a doormat, but now I know how to express that someone has disrespected me and to draw the line and cut them out of my life if needed.

The second quote, I don’t know why.

These statements are not mutually exclusive. Both are true although sometimes one or the other seems to fit a situation better.

I suppose between the two, it would be the second one.
I always felt the way you treat others is a reflection on how your father treated your mother.

I think the latter, but both are true to some extent and not necessarily mutually exclusive. Dr. Phil uses that line we teach people how to treat us a lot, and sometimes I just think we didn’t teach that idiot to treat us like shit, he always was shitty and we just tolerate. When you decide not to tolerate he/she either changes their behavior or you have to leave the relationship with them. So, it is not so much teaching them, but whether we will engage in it. I mean really, when a service person treats me terrible is that really my fault if I have been nothing but polite and patient?

@Dr_Lawrence ‘s answer parrots mine. Both equally true dependent on circumstance.

The first is true on occasion, but the second is always true. The people Hitler exterminated in his gas chambers didn’t teach him to treat them that way.

You reap what you sow, but you cannot control the actions of others.

I’m leaning towards #2.
