Is it just me or all the white guys starting to look alike?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47127points) January 2nd, 2014

Watched “Olympus has Fallen” last night. Man, I couldn’t tell the difference between the president, the secret service guy who saved the president’s life (but lost the First Lady) some traitor and the various and sundry hostages. They all looked like some version of Paul Walker. That and the fact that EVERYTHING was on fire and exploding constantly, and smoke was billowing, and the over all noisy disappointment may have contributed to the confusion.

Just me?

I think your half right, most white movie stars are starting to look alike, but I do not find that in every day life.

No, I don’t find that in everyday life either. Just in the movies and commercials.

It’s all about target demographics.

Someone surveyed 1000 women and asked “what sort of male look gets you ‘hot’?” Or “describe a male face/body type that looks good”. And some schmuck compiled the answers and the producer said “get me 5 6-foot-1-inch guys with dirty blond hair that don’t shave often”. And that’s how they cast that series.

But to be fair, they do the same type of profiling/surveying on women. That’s why most actresses who are playing ‘serious’ roles on TV dramas are dark-haired, and most comedic actresses (sitcoms) are blondes.

It’s all about target audiences.

Well, I wish they all looked like Johnny Depp.

It is all about marketability in Hollywood today.
Prettiness over acting ability.

It’s homoeroticism. People who consume action movies idealize the male physique in a certain way, a sort of romanticized version of the Greek athlete/warrior aesthetic. Probably the only marked difference is they imagine the objects of their fantasies to have much bigger dicks. There is nothing really new about this, but the men have become more svelte and nubile since the days of Clint Eastwood or Schwarzenegger.

It doesn’t mean the viewers are gay, of course, but they are sublimating what is essentially a homosexual fantasy into the communal experience of going to the cinema.

But haven’t they always done that? Why does it seem worse to me now than in the 70’s through the 90’s?

Meh – I could certainly tell the difference between Gerard Butler and everyone else in that movie. Meow.

I always say young Southern white guys (under 30) look the same – like my husband, only not as cute. Average height, skinny, short dark hair, and always wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Redneck couture I guess.

I think a lot of older men look the same, within all races.

They are all siblings.

Siblings 3 times removed, but siblings none-the-less.

Only the hot ones look the same.

It’s true, there’s definitely a “type ” popular these days in movies and especially on TV. You can really see it on the Hallmark Channel. The guys tend to be in their 30s, non-ethnic looking, usually not overly masculine or handsome. The women in TV movies are always strikingly pretty whatever their age (esp. older mothers), well endowed and very generous with cleavage (which the men never seem to notice). TV female detectives and cops are very much a type, too; late 30 and early 40s, beautiful, sexy, tough, also cleavage-sharing.

@Coloma they all have gray goatees and walk like they have a stick up their ass.

Sounds like I’m in pretty good company!

I thought we were supposed to imagine that everybody looks alike.

LOLL!! Good one Josie! But it sure makes it hard to follow a movie plot.
