Why was the fact that Jenny McCarthy was once a Playboy centerfold brought up in this issue?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) January 3rd, 2014

This is making the rounds on fb.

The first line of the article reads “This would be why you shouldn’t receive your medical advice from Playboy centerfolds.”

I agree, she’s an idiot, but what does the fact that she was once a Playboy centerfold have to do with anything at all?

Is it just me or is the question asking something that has little to do with the details? Unless the author of the article is also in Playboy or taking medical advice from someone who is, I don’t see how she’s displaying “exactly the kind of behavior they are campaigning against.”

And what “comparison” are you referring to?

Let me rephrase it: Why was her stint as a Playboy centerfold brought up in this context? What does it have to do with anything?

The Mod Gods Modded. :)

They are saying we shouldn’t take advice from celebrities. Maybe they thought being a Playboy centerfold was her biggest claim to fame.

Are there different degrees of intelligence among celebrities? And is that intelligence based on what career they choose to become a celebrity?

Her son was misdiagnosed by a doctor. How does that make her an idiot?
The parent choosing not to vaccinate their child is the dumbass, not Jenny McCarthy.
People need to use their fucking brains and quit being sheep.
I’m a fan of hers, but I’m certainly not going to follow her advice when it comes to my child.

She has been a talk show host, a World Wrestling Federation girl, a comedic actress in many lesser films and TV shows, and a Playboy model 3 times. You tell me what she is most remembered for.

This blog post is three years old. Why do people share crap this old on Facebook? So annoying.

I believe it has to do with having good judgement, or not. I don’t think posing nude in Playboy magazine (no matter what other credentials you may have, Ph.D or whatever) is using good judgement. It may be perfectly legal, but it makes her appear as a sex object, rather than a human being.

Jenny McCarthy has gone on and on and on for years trying to convince people not to vaccinate their children because she, as a celebrity Playboy model actress (not a doctor or scientist) went on the interwebs and found proof that vaccinations cause autism.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Good catch @glacial. I didn’t realize it was 3 years old. So why have people still been carrying on about the autism/vaccination thing?

glacial's avatar

@Dutchess_III Don’t ask me… I’ve never understood why people were so quick to jump on this bandwagon in the first place.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, because I personally know people who believe that vaccination causes autism. They really need to be set straight, IMO.

Kardamom's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yes, there was a Jelly on here about 3 weeks ago that asked if vaccinations caused autism. She already has a child, but yet in 2013, when that idea has been disproved, she still didn’t know. There’s plenty of people who still don’t know.

jonsblond's avatar

but…but…Jenny said it does

Kardamom's avatar

@jonsblond I’m sorry, what did you say? I was too busy gazing at Jenny’s boobies.

glacial's avatar

@Dutchess_III Here’s a good article for you to post. As she says, perhaps the only way to counter anecdotal evidence is with anecdotal evidence.

No, I don’t really believe that, I’m just being flippant, but it really is a good article.

I think her current claim to fame should be that she’s Melissa McCarthy’s cousin, who is hillarious.

Katniss's avatar

@cookieman Yes!!!!! That woman kills me. I really loved her in Bridesmaids.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Kardamom some people know but they won’t give it up. They just don’t want their conspiracy theory bubble burst. It makes them fee superior to “know” something that others don’t know.

Kardamom's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yeah, I know. I had one friend acquaintance who I had to block on Facebook because she lived for conspiracy theories. I think it made her feel superior to have knowledge that the rest of us didn’t have. She smokes a lot of dope too, not sure if that fueled her desire for CT’s or the other way around.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Thanks @Kardamom. It’s crazy sometimes.

My point is, guys, if she’d been in any other “profession” when she was younger, would it have even been brought up in the form of “This would be why you shouldn’t receive your medical advice from [insert old profession]?” As it stands, isn’t the comment nothing more than a form of slut shaming? I mean, does anybody shame or discredit Arnold Swartzener based on the fact that he was once a body builder and showed his whole body off (almost) for the whole world to see?

Women and sex. Women and sex. Get over it!

In the non-cyber world, as with here, double-minded hypocrisy runs rampant. The only reason for bringing up her Playboy past was shock value, with a did against her because supposedly taking off your clothes in front of a camera for big bucks, is somehow supposedly different than if she were in an underground vid boinking a dog, on the big scene shooting a sex scene, or never have been on camera just boinking a different guy from the bar each week. When it comes to sex, here in the US we try as a whole society, not everyone buys into that crap, that popular sex no matter how debase is OK, and unpopular sex, no matter how expected, or natural is seen as weird, kinky, nasty or worse. Doing a sex scene on the big screen, OK, doing sex with no holds barred on the Internet, not OK for example. Mentioning it served no value to the story they were trying to say.
