With our current system, it is incredibly helpful to have deep pockets, or friends with deep pockets in order to win an election. It disgusts me, but since the guys in power are the only ones who can change the system, it is highly unlikely to change.
Yes, wealth it a prerequisite. It’s expensive to run even for low-level elected jobs on the local level.
The only glimmer of light is that it’s not a prerequisite that you’re born to wealth. Reagan, Clinton and Obama were all born and raised on modest means, yet made good and rose to the top.
Mostly agree @DWW25921. Kudos for originality. Demerit for foreign aid.
But I lost all respect for Howard Stern over a decade ago, when I heard him say live on air that every woman should be required to have at least one abortion, for the sole purpose of filling New York’s potholes with the fecal tissue. No more Howard for me since that day.
When 90% of congress are millionaires, probably.
Yes, absolutely. Poor people don’t have the wherewithal to organize and finance a campaign, nor to take the time off of work to actually run for an office.
@elbanditoroso “take the time off of work to actually run for an office” no kiddng, I always wonder about who has time to make all those appearances, shake all those hands, kiss all those babies… These people are either unemployed, self-employed, or seriously sponsored by (obligated to) someone.
@dabbler – that’s why you have to be independently wealthy, inherited wealth, or own a company and not need to show at work.
Being wealthy is only part of it. You also have to be able to hand people a bunch of bullshit and make it smell like roses and get them to believing they not only need it, but can’t live without it.
